I need a new job in London.
I have 3 years experience and a good portfolio (print and identity mostly), but a few agencies have said that I'm not what their clients are looking for.
How do you get into a half decent studio, coming from an in-house background?
Much obliged,
- jamble0
If you've got good experience and a good portfolio but you're not what they're looking for, I'd suggest you're applying for jobs in the wrong part of the industry.
I find that if you apply for anything and they say something like that, most companies are happy to provide feedback on your interview/folio/experience if you ask them.
There's nothing to lose when asking and a lot to gain so why not just ask them directly.
I couldn't see your folio as the link in your profile goes to a holding page so it's difficult to say if it needs tweaking.

I think you should seriously invest in a clean simple site,
that will promote your artwork to anyone in the world and show that you are net "savyy" (hate that word)

(Nov 14 06, 02:51)I have been there. Still waiting to hear back from them. From previous experience this is a good thing. If you are no good they send out some auto reply the next day.
What do you mean by blag it?
What can i say to swing it?
- not_report0
Do you have any work online?

d00d you've got to have a portfolio online to get work!

I also heard that SAS were hiring too.

(Nov 14 06, 03:35)No, and I think this is partly why I'm not taken seriously.
I don't have the skills to build my own and can't afford to pay for one.

(Nov 14 06, 03:39)just get the template from here: http://www.danieleatock.com/

I don't know how it is with print / non web jobs but I don't think it would hurt to have a simple folio online to complement a book that you take with you (assume you are taking something along to interviews?).
I'm sure some kindly web designer here could whip up a simple folio template for your work if you asked nicely.

(Nov 14 06, 03:39)it needn't be fancy, and you don't need many skills at all. you should be able to put something nice together pretty easily and learn a bit about html and css in the process!

Just put a nice holding page up and a downloadable portfolio (pdf) on it?
Which Agencies would you love to work for?
SAS -Â ooooooooooooH
- Dancer0
I hear para is doing a super job for another NT member and the turnaround is astounding
;pBut yeah optimise images and drop into an Eatock
- paraselene0
don't you start dancer!
*shakes fist
that's moth's fault.
:P
- phatlee0
I'd like a site doing if anyones interested?
*feels cheeky
- Crouwel0
yeah just put yer work samples in a template from daniel eatcock.
simple as that.
- Baskerville0
I'm sure para will sort you out with a simple self-updating cms site, quick smart.
:o)
seriously though, if I can make my own site with only a limited grasp of dreamweaver 3 and html then I'm sure you can. Just borrow a copy from someone.
Or like others have said, view the source code of an 'eatock' (that pisses me off that we refer to a simple page with 2 frames by his name) page and change the text and images, easy!

The gerneral consensus seems to be that i need an online folio.
Thanks for your help and suggestions guy.
Lots of love,
