Support...MT gains respect cause of their support. And seriously...is it really THAT expensive for what you get? It's your BUSINESS.

I host on Mt's dedicated virtual currently and to switch to grid when this method expires. I had some troubles setting up plesk with passwords and shiz, but now it's magic. the support is unreal. they had 1 period of downtime in the whole year due to an upgrade. and it was only 6 hours in the last year... also $20USD is roughly only £10/month... CHEAP. Will gladly pay it.

Considering there's a few designers around here...I'm surprised more people aren't commenting on the design of Dreamhost control panel/support site compared to MT... is saving a few dollars a month really worth slumming it in terms of usability, visual quality, total quality?

I started with them, then started using the bigger companies. As soon as I needed to call the large companies I got connected to someone in the Philippines that barely spoke English and obviously was just regurgitating some manual.
That was enough. Now all my clients are hosted on MT.
24x7 tech support that is always great.
Plus, 100gigs of storage is superb.

fyi - not one of my sites have MT listed on it ;-)

just bought 4 new design books with one referral reward coming into my paypal, w00t.

But i will say, a few months ago I was having some issues for a couple days, off and on. However, the last few months have been way better, if it happens again i may look elsewhere.
I was not impressed with my (mt) experience. Always had problems uploading there, and they pretty much said it was my internet connection. (friend on a different ISP had the same issues too)

i thought about media temple, then i took my head out of my ass and went with bluehost.com. who is so far super.
the morning after i signed up, i received a call from a real person asking if i enjoyed the signup process, if i had any questions, concerns....
sure its my business, but considering 0.0001% of my design business comes from my empty website, i'll save the $13 a month.

Our experience with Dreamhost has been awful. They've been down very frequently for many reasons (bad hardware, power outtages, etc.). Emails didn't arrive, our programs constantly asked for our passwords, etc.
I like Dreamhost and think that they're nice people -- their blog (www.dreamhoststatus) with updated problems is really honest and open. But I really am unhappy with them. I would definitely not recommend them unless you're using your site and email infrequently and just want a place to throw files up on a server...

if it's only for your own personal site, don't use MT...it's too expensive...
if you intend to have a hosting option for your clients, the grid is where it's at
i can say that i have settled on using MT for all my stuff...
and with my 50% discount, it's only 10$'s a month...
i paid 5 times that up until now to have my own dedicated virtual...so yeah, it's cheap for what you get

I already made an NT mate happy for paying only $22 a year for 200+Gb hosting and a free domain at NT.
they have problems as well as every hosting company, but a good thing is that all outages, downs and problems are always up to date in their status site http://dreamhoststatus.com , and besides, they are very quick on support. Avg. 20-40 minutes till you get a reply... if you want to transfer a domain, they can do almost all the work for you...

(mt) = very little downtime, SPAM is a problem.
dreamhost = your neighbor on the server box can make it a bad experience
godaddy = seems ok but haven't had much experience with them

I've been using 1and1 for about 4 years.
technical support is crap, but then I hardly ever need it.
There is intermittent downtime, but no more than I see on Newstoday over an average week.
I've also been using MT over the last few weeks for a client, and I've had problems with downtime and not being able to access FTP for a couple of hours. But again, nothing more than I get with 1and1.

I think using MT is being a sucker for a label?! $20 is insane!
I use 1&1 in the UK, they are really good, with an excellent webstats and webmail facility. They launched in the US last year to, but don't know what they are like there...

do people actually know what they get for it?

hollister- How long have you been with bluehost? Most importantly hows the e-mail? Thanks.
I was considering Media Temple, but just can't justify the $20 a month...

$1o bucks for MT when you switch from SS to grid, or do you all have me on ignore.

I've had clients on mt sites and it is ok but my own site and a couple other clients are on Lunar Pages and they rock. Reasonable. Great customer service...always responsive to my questions, even when they've been stupid questions. :) And they give you a free domain for life.
