Need your advice here. I have been working for this agency for almost 4 years and decided recently it's time for a change. I submitted my resume to a couple of job postings, and found out yesterday at my first interview that my current employer was bad mouthing me. I have received only the best compliments so far, and was promoted just recently, however my current employer told the company that called in as a reference that I had trouble meeting deadlines and because of my kids wasn't willing to work over time. I don't think I have ever missed a deadline and work over time all the time...
I feel like quitting right now, any thoughts?
thanks for you input

confront them.
i take it you've already told them you're leaving, before you go giving them as references?

Tell them not to call your current employer.

(Nov 9 06, 08:40)Yes, and/or give specific contacts of people you can trust.
You're going to need references, it doesn't have to be your boss who wants to keep you there forever.

The first mistake was to use your current employer as a reference. Its not suprising their sand-bagging your attempt to move on.
Secondly, I can see why you are leaving, what a lying bastard to say those things.
Advice: No matter how pissed off you are, never let your reaction to a situation be not in your best interest.
Quitting might seem an option but if that puts your financially under the pump, especially with a small child then don't do it. Make sure you do whats best for you and leave when you're ready, and not let a wanker employer force you into that decision.
6 months from now when its all behind you, you'll see that putting up with some shit for the sake of financial stability was well worth it.

What sucks is some bosses can but cunts, but you have to use them as references. They have the upper hand. I want the upper hand. Touch me

Actually I didn't list them as a reference, but it was the last company in my resume I worked for. So they must have taken it upon them to just cell "us"...
Financially I am more than capable of just walking away...

who gives your current employer as a reference?
i would never never do that.
- k0na_an0k0
uh, i thought by law an employer can not bad mouth you like that. even if you're a complete asshole an employer has to give you a good reference. now...
to be honest, 99.9% of places you're interviewing with know most likely your present company will not be used as a reference. cause if you do use your present company and interview, then your current company knows you're interviewing and bad things happen. when i interviewed here they asked if they could call my current company and before i answered they said 'it's ok to say no, everyone says no'.
never. i repeat never, user your current employer as a reference.
but since you did i'd try my best to smooth things over with the place you interviewed at without being negative towards the person who gave you a crappy reference.
and if it's really chapping your ass go to the person who gave you the shitty reference and talk to them about it, but beware, that ain't gonna end good and as a gambling man, i'd bet you won't have a job when you leave their office.
don't put all your eggs into one basket. get a new job first, tell your new employer that you won't be able to start for two weeks (as it's good guy policy to put in your two weeks with a company cause it makes you look good) then go in and tell your boss to kiss your fucking ass.
then enjoy your two weeks off and get some housework done.

(Nov 9 06, 08:44)Alright, did someone change "be" into but before the word cunt in my comment above? Real mature whoever is moderating. Wait, or is that a typo by me? LOL ROFLOL
I'm bored today

I would be a little upset with the company that just decided to call. Most companies ask if it's ok first. I would ask them to give the name of the person that they talked to and go have a talk with them about it.

there's only one solution. sleep with your bosses wife

I'm looking to move from my current job but no one knows that I'm going to interviews. I arrange the interviews for before work and I leave my folio at a friend's office on the way in, no one sees anything. My current employers and most certainly not a reference, I'm sure they'd be nice about it but I don't want the stress of them knowing when I haven't told them I'm quitting yet!
- JustWork0
I agree, but my concern is really not with the company I interviewed with that called my current employer, but my current boss who tells me I am the greatest thing since sliced bread but badmouths me...
I didn't expect that at all...

Financially being able to walk away is a good thing. And the vengefull bastard in me would confront them but it may not be worth it. Best revenge would be getting another gig you prefer.
But I never burn bridges, well, try not to anyway.

He badmouthed you so you won't leave.
