have you ever turned down decent work becuase the client's logo is sucking ass, so bad.
i've been offered a big packaging and ID dev project but the core logo is so weak.. and its been clearly stated in the briefing that we cannot tweak or redesign.
what's the polite way of saying "thanks but no thanks; your logo stinks and is not worth my time".

depends on how bad you need the cash

you're too busy and unavailable to take on anymore work at this time.

"i really hate to do this, but i know a more available and flexible designer at the moment named madirish who would love to...."

(Oct 30 06, 14:19)haha.
so are you saying you're able to look past this kinda stuff and still get motivated by money or whatever drives you?
i feel like i should be able to motivate myself and turn this into somekind of a challange, but i look again and it still sucks ass.

Can we see the logo?

(Oct 30 06, 14:17)problem is i already casually stated that i was interested in the project, prior to seeing the logo.

ha- no, i actually do the same thing, duder. i definitly do not put $$ first in this game. life is too short. now, there is also a time when i could either eat, or turn down work. that is a no brainer, but i really do try to be as discerning as i can afford to now.
along those ideas- nothing is final and nothing is certain. what about taking on the job but right off the bat, making sugestions to strengthen the mark so the client can see some tangible, real reasons they can relate to as to what improving the mark can do for them? i have had that work in the past. don;t spend too much time on it though.
good luck.

(Oct 30 06, 14:29)i can appreciate your curiousity but i also think that posting a client's logo that i'm shit talking would be very unprofessional of me.
it basically just the company name set very poorly in some free font/ extended black sans.

tell them exactly what you told us, but dont use ass in the description. i have found that clients will respect your honesty and come back with other work in the future.

(Oct 30 06, 14:44)phew.. thx mitee.
just removed all instances of "ass" from the email in my outbox.
seriously though, the NT advice is much appreciated and i think i'm gonna turn this down.. 2007 is already looking killer busy.

show me the ass!!
hmm, anyways, I'm in the same boat right now, didn't even bother trying to use the logo my studio created 5 years ago for this project, so I'm proposing a restyle along with the booklets said client wanted. He's really small-time so I can probably get away with this and I'm not proposing we charge him for it...
I just need to stress to my CD is that if the guy wants to expand and be perceived more professionally then he can't use his existing logo. Seeing as that there's no real 'brand-value' or recognition with his current ID then we should take this opportunity to re-evaluate the identity and what it needs to communicate...blah blah blah...

I tend to look at it differently, the client sucks, the pay sucks, but Ill try to create something really nice for my port, which will in turn generate that cheeeeese later on, so immediate...yes it blows, but just try and look ahead

You could throw it my way Tim, I have a wedding to pay for... any extra work is welcome right now.
Cheers.

you starrted your new job?

a 42" flat panel hdtv would cloud my vision as to the aforementioned logo. Then again, I'm just hack that does this shit for the money and occasionally gets to do something worthwhile.
I'm 34, my spirit was broken sometime in the 90's.
