Design is important but small aspect of all the above.

(Aug 22 06, 13:03)I strongly disagree. It's usually treated that way, and that's why many designers' abilities are used only in a handicapped fashion to arrive at a sterilized solution...but it shouldn't be that way.
A great designer understands and can drive strategy. However, so many of us have gotten lazy/whiny and get bogged down in the details, so clients and marketeers start to see us as little more than wallpaper hangers. Pawns for making things look Pretty.
I work at a design firm, and our clients solicit us to not only design but help steer their strategy. Visual thinkers should be in charge of visual marketing tools. It's that simple.
And for the record I think marketing is a dirty word. Makes me think of a dusty fruit stand in Calcutta. All the jargon that flies around about demographics, audiences, and branding misses the mark 90% of the time. I've found that when I communicate to individuals instead of groups, people actually connect with the 'brand' I'm designing for.
