if you've never had a bike, why not just go on craigslist or go into a store, get a cheapo used one and see what you like and dont like about it, before you drop $700 on something you don't even know you'll want or like.
You don't need super high end mega performance right away. Just make sure you get a 'love canal' bike seat if you're gonna be on there for a while.
