For an ad agency, is a suit jacket too much?

hell no it is not

Depends the level of agency, I went once to an interview with a really nice dress shirt/pants and shiny shoes and the CD came out in a shirt and jeans. I felt a little ackward but it was my fault for not studying my audience.

you can really never overdress on an interview... tie and slacks should be fine

wearing a suit is bad. bad suit makes you look cheesy. good suit makes you look like too much of a climber. wear a hoodie and speedos

Call HR and ask for attire or go by the place and see what everyone is wearing. You want to make a good first impression and yes you can overdress if you are not carefull.

choose a member of the village people to emulate and you should be okay

how can you overdress? its an ad agency... the people interviewing you are usually the corporate heads... your trying to impress those guys not the "trendy" designers working for them

nowadays in the US the suit and tie is a bit much - which I wore to an interview a few years ago and got made fun of. no one in agencies, especially creatives, dress up. I wouldn't wear a tie on a pitch which is as dressed up as you need to get.
basically you need to present yourself as a professional and can fit in to their "culture". I say wear a shirt and blazer and let your portfolio be the focus of the interview.

I work for a very big ad agency, if you're a creative then a suit is OTT. If you're a account handler, producer etc then a suit is fine. We always have a giggle when a creative turns up in a suit...

exactly.. i'm a freelance illustrator and work for big agencies often.. the best dressed people are the partners.. and of them i've never seen a tie. great shoes, hair and dress shirt-yes. but no ties. A good attitude, folio & humor you can come in wearing a wolf tshirt :)

I'd wear the same as if I was presenting to a client... slightly smarter than normal... but only in the fact that I'd of thought of what I was going to wear rather than just throw something on. Then again I've never had an interview in my life so might not be the best advice!

Maybe not.
Remember some details that can express that your are a creative guy. Maybe i can lend may tie with pixel art cubes, if you want.

Not having to wear a tie is one of many tiny reasons lots of us are in this industry, isn't it? ;)
I came in jeans, suede adidas sneakers and a cord suit jacket over a hoodie to my last interview, a corporate one. Got the job.
