why would they sell to a competitor. They bought out macromedia for a reason. To reduce their competition.
- dinky0
mind you Macromedia was planning to kill of FH anyways..
its not the Adobe's doing

there's a running theory that adobe bought macromedia because adobe was worried microsoft would buy macromedia and become a direct competitor. i'm not sure i buy it, but microsoft did buy creature house (expression) and is definitely moving in that direction.
aside from that, i don't think adobe bought macromedia to reduce cometition so much as to become the industry leader in some of the markets that macromedia excelled in (mostly web creation via dreamweaver and flash). if adobe bought companies just to reduce competition they'd have bought out quark a long time ago.
now, illustrator has a vast majority of the vector market, and freehand has been relegated to nitch markets. most would argue that illustrator is a better product, but i imagine freehand has its place (much like some people use rhino instead of 3dsmax or maya). if adobe doesn't want to spend the resources developing it, then they might as well make a few bucks on the selling of it to someone who thinks it's worth while.

sorry, they still bought it to gain market share, therefore reducing competition, seriously we will be have the same conversation in a few months when they kill golive(lol)
A company wouldn't sell a potencially competitive product to someone who will just market it against the other company. Your giving then too much credit, IMO

please understand that I'm not saying that MS wasn't looking to buy MM

Yeah, why would they even run the risk of selling and someone else developing FH into something better than illy.

(May 17 06, 21:13)i'm assuming you are joking (speaking specifically on the microsoft buy), but i really doubt that would happen.
that coming from a mainly pc user.
I have really never used freehand...and when i did it was a clusterfuck.

I also think at the time adobe know they coould make a better product than quark, which they did, and only then did quark have to rethink and regroup

in other words why buy a turd and polish it when you can lay a masterpiece

i'm still going to use it anyway...
I Love My FH

They're not going to come around your house and take Freehand off you though... so don't panic...
You'll just be like one of those dusty people in a cardie 'tinkering' around with Corel Draw and clipArt

I would love a multi page feature in illy. Of course indesign would be the answer here.

If they dont pay serious consideration to the strong points of Freehand and build them into Illuatrator then they are crazy, there are many things that Freehand does either better or Illy does not at all. I have begun switching to Illy but I still find myself doing certain bits in Freehand and then exporting/importing back into Illy which is ridiculous. So many good, time saving, ease of use benefits in freehand I am sad to see it go, not sad to see the shitty postscript go but hey..

So where is the press info relating to this?
Is there a better link out there?
- rasko40
pure speculation!
