French is latin like italian, spanish or portuguese.
living in a French speaking country, like France or Belgium [ike I did] really shortens your learning curve.

(May 9 06, 08:06)I also took Latin and I would agree that it's REALLY similar to French and English, as a few other languages are. Living in a french-speaking area helps out too. Maybe start in Quebec where the French is more like franglais (eng + fr) and then move to France...if you really are that serious about it...

I had some québécois colleagues, the accent was really funny.
Really amusing, accent-wise, are french speaking italian/spanish guys, I could hardly understand what they were saying.

This is partly because I hate speaking different languages since I believe my voice isn't cool enough to pull it off...
