i took beginner 1 for 10 classes, around 300 hours. reading, speaking and writing.
perhaps around 600 hours to speak, read and write fluent beginner french?
- usrper0
hmm.. 600 hours...
wonder what else i can do with that time?
invent a machine that feeds languages into brain?

i know
english
polish
italian
russian
some french

it would probably help if you knew a different second language already. maybe u do?
yeah, that sounds stupid, but it's all about the pronunciation and your willingness to put your ass out there to try and communicate in public.
imo, since you already have it in the back of your head somewhere, probably about 3 months if you steadily do it

French isn't like any other language. I've studied for 6 years, lived there for several years and still can't speak for shit.
I studied italian for a year, and I speak that ten times better.
And I learn englesh from abook.

The grammar part is annoying, just as it is with most other languages.
Some would say that if you know lots of languages it means you can retain more than the usual person, but it also means you can get lots of words confused with each other.
I'm at about an intermediate level since I took immersion in middle and high school but I don't remember everything now. I'm taking a refresher course in the future since it's really nice to have here in Canada.
It won't take a few weeks to learn the language. For the basics, I'd say about half a year to a year. For advanced stuff, it could take years. If you don't have access to classes (which are the best, imo), then try online or written methods. Just make sure you practice every week or so to retain it all.

I can use double negatives in Afrikaans. It's totally right
ha ahaha I love that

You don't need to speak French.
Just point at things and talk loudly. If they don't understand, just smash the place up!
