dinky,
Couple things:
I would add East Village as a nice area to live. Safe and a lot of good things to do, eat, drink, etc
You should be able to get a 1 bedroom in the areas you are talking about for what you are lookin to spend. I had some friends looking for a 1 bedroom and that got a decent 1BR in the EV for $1800/mo for about 450 sq ft. They ended up sucking it up and going through a broker because it was actually cheaper then some of the craigslist deals and it was a million times less of a pain.

I think when you first move to NYC, you should live in the city if you can since you are going to be running around every night of the week - or you should.
When I moved here 3 years ago, I left 2/3 of my stuff at my parents house and I still have never gotten it. You'll go through that fight club moment where you realize you don't need that crap and you get the apt theorpy zen going on to maximize the space you have.
I own my place now, 700 sq ft in the WV and I am still trying to reduce stuff. If you need a lot of space, I think everyone is on the money with the dealz (harlem, Queens, crappier parts of brooklyn) but who needs space?
Long live the fucking insanely expensive shoebox!!
