ok so I am making a cd cover for a band. I am have the cover all good and everything, but I have outlying peices of my vectors hanging out over the border and everything. I am trying to get it press ready. Is there any way to just chop it clean and crop it without having to mess with every vector point? (illy cs2, btw)
thanks

thanks!
i did that before, but the stuff didn't disappear, so the printers will know? or is that all formatted so it will be cropped when printed?

pathfinder pallette?
- NegativeSpace0
Yes the printer will know, all that stuff will get cut off and you shouldn't have to worry about it.
You could always use the pathfinder tool and the divide function to seperate those elements outside of the cropped area and delete the broken up vectors if you want it to be nice and clean, just make sure you leave a 1/4" or 1/8" bleed outside of the crop area to be safe if you choose to do that.

clipping mask
draw a circle, square, whatever over your artwork and go object > mask > create clipping mask.
or
select both and ALT (option) 7
shift alt 7 to release.

clipping mask is a pain in the ass though... you can only do it over one shape.
i've subtracted out my artwork/bleed area from a larger white shape before, so its like a window.
if you set your crop/bleed lines, the printer will know whats going on

are you sending the work file (ai)to printers? why not make a printfile (pdf)? then you can select the crop area while making the postscript file

I hate the way illustrator handles clipping paths, in freehand the equivalent is to 'paste inside', then when you select the box you dont have any overhanging shit everything outside just dissapears which is really handy when it comes to using the align tool, because in illustrator your item will still take coordinates from all that gunk that is clipped away, but actually 'still there'
pain in the ass

There's no 'Paste inside' function in Illustrator?

the clipping path is the equivalent

clipping paths are the devil for print.
why not draw a nice box around what you wanna keep, make sure it's on top of everything else and selected, go object>path>divide objects below and delete all the trimmed-off crap.
- GreedoLives0
only works on shapes tho, not lines or text (unless it's outlined).
- rasko40
how about on images?

I don't see what the problem with using a mask to hide the extraneous stuff and then setting a crop area. This should be more than enough. I wouldn't recommend dividing everything because if you're fastidious about grouping or layering then it'll destroy all of that. I find the clipping mask to be a cinch to use, but I know no different, but if you're looking for something similar to a 'paste inside' function then try out ctrl-B to paste behind the selected object (or everything on the layer if nothing selected) or similarly ctrl-F to paste in front. I do this all the live long day since my job revolves around creating masks and then printing them.

the tradeoff of having no 'paste inside' like freehand is that illustrator doesn't suck and integrates nicely with the other CS programs.
- GreedoLives0
because a mask just hides shit that's still there and that'll cause you no end of grief when you go to the printer with it. set up your files right you sloppy bastards, i'm tired of having to fix your mistakes.

Haven't read all posts but why don't you just save the illy as an .eps and put into Quark/InDesign.
Then create a Hi-Res PDF if you want??
- rasko40
MLP al you ever do is moan about software you dont use, you think everyone should use indesign over quark, illy over freehand blah blah but you dont really have any experience using either so you cant really have a valid opinion, you are just rehashing what you have been told, and you never deal with the issue, you are the human equivalent of the mac vs pc argument.
