I don't see what the problem with using a mask to hide the extraneous stuff and then setting a crop area. This should be more than enough. I wouldn't recommend dividing everything because if you're fastidious about grouping or layering then it'll destroy all of that. I find the clipping mask to be a cinch to use, but I know no different, but if you're looking for something similar to a 'paste inside' function then try out ctrl-B to paste behind the selected object (or everything on the layer if nothing selected) or similarly ctrl-F to paste in front. I do this all the live long day since my job revolves around creating masks and then printing them.
