i am charlatan.
- paraselene0
all of my serious academic work has been in linguistics rather than any sort of visual theory (but, of course, any linguistic study post-saussure has to address issues of semiology by way of approaching semantics).
nor do i have any formal design training, so i don't feel particularly confident participating in this discussion.
i don't even consider myself a designer as such, more a low-level construction worker these days. if i were, however, to market myself as a designer i'd feel like a charlatan if i didn't have a basic understanding of semiotic structualism, etc.

3D form as a graphic language...

The respose to this thread is about what I expected. I studied 3D design and semiotics was a strong focus of the course.
The reason I never chose to study graphics was because I thought it was too concerned with style and trends, rather than being concerned with social issues.
In 3D design, the only language you have is semiotics. When you have no written word or graphic symbols, how do you communicate with the user?

i guess I have to sharp up my english, know what I mean? Back to Semiotics, what is it, and how relevant is it?

it´s cool, para.

Semiology is a understanding tool, without it, couldn´t get to my solutions, uderstanding how it´s going to react on people´s mind, better? how do you know that a visual works? or communication?

i'm just teasing, val.
;)

Maybe I am! Defenetely dont text like. And you´re right, English is not my native language.

(or perhaps you're making some sort of incisive point about morphology. i'm not sure.)

(Mar 9 06, 02:02)now i know that english is not your first language, but i don't speak 13-year-old-sms-talk, so you're going to have to meet me halfway here.

Hahaha, that brings back happy memoiries moth.
Sitting in 'critical and contextual studies' discussing 'kets'. Looking at how kids have this little mini adult world, made of sweets. Watches, rings, necklaces, jewellery and stuff.
Disecting it all afternoon, then our tutor just picked a handful up, shoved them in his mouth and said, "WOW, these are fuckin' lovely!"
Rendered to the point of meaningless...

All graphic design really is, is language.
- determinedmoth0
It is vital for understanding communication.

(Mar 9 06, 01:43)It's also really good for disecting it to the point of meaningless.

I had running battles with Uni tutors when writing my dissertation on Hypertext and General Semantics. I thought it was absolutely crystal - it's place. They thought otherwise.. although I think a short section about William Boroughs and his take on Alfred Korzbyski proper freaked them out. I went ahead and did it anyway and got a low grade. Basically I don't think they understood it.
Not quite Semiology, but thought I'd share that anyway.

i would say it's imperative.
i reckon baskerville would agree.
you'll hear the contrary from a lot of people, though. in the end i suppose it's a personal preference.

In some other forum, which the subject is not relevant, i realised that altought most of the comments were posted by designers, the knowledge and importance around semiotics/semiology, was, shall I say O. How Important is this subject for us, Designers that deal with visual assets, in a day basis?
