all of my serious academic work has been in linguistics rather than any sort of visual theory (but, of course, any linguistic study post-saussure has to address issues of semiology by way of approaching semantics).
nor do i have any formal design training, so i don't feel particularly confident participating in this discussion.
i don't even consider myself a designer as such, more a low-level construction worker these days. if i were, however, to market myself as a designer i'd feel like a charlatan if i didn't have a basic understanding of semiotic structualism, etc.
