I'm looking to buy a new digital camera, roughly 9-10MP. Been looking at the Fuji Finepix S9500...
http://www.fujifilm.co.uk/digita…
Can anyone recommend this one or similar? Who makes the best cameras - Canon/Fuji/Nikon etc?

I've got a crappy 4mp nikon camera so my opinion might not be worth poop. But here it is anyways.
Canon and Nikon do make the best ones. Better than Fuji. I have noticed Canon is more used among pros than nikon.
I've seen the quality of the pix friends take with their 6 and 8 mp Nikon (can't remember the models though one could be the D70) and it was pretty good. I also saw what a friend of a friend did with an olympus evolt 500 and was also very impressed with the quality, but then this guy's hobby is photography.Check http://www.dpreview.com
I'm sure you already knwo this site, but who knows.

yeah...definately check out the site VectorMasked sent.
I am on my second Canon Elph...I LOVE that camera. My first is still working...my Wife carries it.
My new one has been dropped twice in two weeks. The first time the lens was out, and it landed right on steel sheet...a small ring popped off and it still works. A couple days ago it slid around 12 feet across our tile floor...it still works. My friend Allan (worldrider.com) dropped his off his motorcycle WHILE he was riding. It STILL works.
Those Canon Elphs are bulletproof...it may be less resolution than you want but check 'em out.

I'd recommend either a pocket size point and shoot (canon ixus, pentax optio) or a dslr, nothing in between.
As for dslr.. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta.. I'd stay away from olympus, as it's noisy and has expensive non standard (new standard actually) lenses.
Minolta ceases to sell their cameras and they will be rebranded sony in the next months btw. Or rather sony will come up with new minolta based models.

Are you dead set on 9 - 10mp? That's pretty high. Do you really need it? Unless you're planning on printing your pictures really large, 6 - 8mp is probably plenty. There are a good few canon DSLR's around that mp range at great prices. I have the Canon 20D (8mp) and it's hot (I don't mean stolen).

This reminds me about this guy I met a few blocks from my place who works for a major electronics chain store........let's call it F Shop..... and he has access to the new shipments when they just arrive and can get pretty much grab anything and offered me any digital SLR for 400 CAD.
Sounds tempting eh

*buh-buh-bump*
Thanks.
I just liked the look of the Fuji because of the manual focus (autofocus on digital cameras is piss-poor at best). Plus it's less to carry round than a DSLR. I'd go for less MP, as long as the image quality is good enough for me to use for hi-res print work.
I'll check out dpreview.com for some alternatives but the Fuji is looking like the strongest option right now.

I wouldn't call myself a photographer or anything like it but took the plunge & bought the Nikon D70 about 18 months ago & haven't looked back...
It is a great piece of kit & well worth the money... I agree with much of what has been said, particularly the comment about buying either a point-and-click or a Digital SLR - nothing in between... the difference is HUGE & it all depends on how much you plan on using it...
But I would highly recommend the D70 - 6 to 8 megapixels is plenty & some of the shots I've taken have been blown up very large (billboards & such like) without losing resolution...
Take the plunge, methinks...

i have a nikon d50 and love it, had a cannon 350d but swaped it after a few weeks, felt cheap and was too small for my hands.
- Eleanor_R0
The Nikon D50 is fantastic. Smaller and simpler than the D70 which is all whisles and bells.
- smith_barry0
Hmmm.... the D50 is a very good camera, perfect for someone sitting on the proverbial fence, trying to decide whether a point-and-click camera will suffice or whether they would be better off with more control...
But, if you have any experience with SLR cameras & have confidence in your abilities then I think the D70 would offer that bit more control & you may find slightly better results...
It's all down to how much you're going to use it & how much you want to spend...
- imakedesign0
i dont think you really need the d70 unless you are semi-pro, and need the few extras it has over the d50. the only drawback to the d50 is the top lcd does not light up (annoying at gigs) d50 has the same build quailtiy and even slightly lower noise than teh d70.

buy the d50 and with the money you save gets some decent glass,
the glass is much more important than the body.

Good advice in this thread! Thanks NT!

So that's a big resounding "NO" to the Fuji then? I was only hoping to spend £350-400 so it seemed like a good choice. I'd definitely look at the Nikon D50 though, doubt my budget would stretch to the D70.

my VERY last words on the subject of digital camera's.
SOMEHOW people have a pre-installed sense of hatred against fuji in thir heads.
i have been working with many fuji camera's thru the years (first was a S1Pro back in 1999 when i was a press photographer).
I can tell you this: regarding the chip (which is the film of your digital camera): THERE is NO camera coming anything near the superb tolerance of detail in highlights and shadows as the fuji does. because of this fuji is by far the best to produce clean images even with long shutter speeds, night shots etc. It has amazing noise-suppression that really makes me love FujiFilm again and again.
so i say,
do it.

oh and btw: the nikon and canon adoration is only strengthened by it's popularity, not quality..
especially nikon still leaves me disappointed when it comes to digital photography. a brand like this could offer so much better but they keep ending below expectations imho. i have worked with the d20, d100, d1, d1h and d2x and especially the d2x is a lot better, but at that price you'd expect much better reproduction of color and detail IMHO..

..but ofcourse i am only defending a brand that always made me happy, qualitywise.
you must make you own choice ofcourse, heh..

If I was buiying today I would get the nikon d200 without a doubt

ive been loking at the Olympus E-500 recently. But some people say its better than canon and nikon, but reviewers say diffeent.
everyone has different opinions and you'll never find a 100% answer of 'This is Better than that in every way'. it sucks
