I'd recommend either a pocket size point and shoot (canon ixus, pentax optio) or a dslr, nothing in between.
As for dslr.. Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta.. I'd stay away from olympus, as it's noisy and has expensive non standard (new standard actually) lenses.
Minolta ceases to sell their cameras and they will be rebranded sony in the next months btw. Or rather sony will come up with new minolta based models.
