Why the hate for Avant Garde?

I've been doing some reading on the history of this typeface and I've come across a lot of articles and comments that just bash it. Why? What's the deal? Are professional typographers just so anal that they can't deal with it? Personally I think it's a great fucking font. I see no reason why so many people should be against it.

I like it way better than futura for example, but still not one of my favorites...

avant gard was not designed to be a 'standard' typeface. it was created custom for a series of posters. in those applications it worked very well.
when i see it used it's typically a "i need an artsy font" situation, and then doesn't work very well at all.

I knew of it as the logotype that Lubalin designed for the Avant Garde magazine, using those alternate characters we see today to interlock them etc. So to me if was a very custom thing he did for those specific applications. On that note I think he set the type quite well. It seems like such a novelty type and dosn't look very unique or original when I see other people trying to use it the same way way. Where something like Helvetica is overused I have more of an understanding of because of the way it is designed, I see avant garde in a different light I guess.
Oh and I also think many of the characters are ugly, for me its comes off as being too geometric, I think Futura or Avenir do a better job of being geometric without being too explcit about it.

people hate on it because bad designers use it as a cop-out to make something seem stylish
and there's a ridiculous plentitude of these shit designers so it's overused
same reason why everyone hates comic sans
because ignorant people use them
- NegativeSpace0
for sure, scarbin makes a good point.

Avant Garde is hated because it is all geometry and type designers hate geometry

Pure overuse and misuse. AG can be beautiful.

I've always like it a lot. I used to use it too much and a designer friend of mine got on me to the point that I just took it out of Suitcase.
I think it's potentially great, especially the lighter versions of it.
Comic Sans, however is hard pressed to be a good font in almost any case. Even in cartoon situations, there are many far superior choices.

Although I will give comic sans credit for being able to hint down to smallish sizes on screen better than some.

well, it's not really AG on its own. mostly it is the combined use of AG with AG Alt, it's been used and mostly abused over and over again.
and it gets tiresome.
but there are some good examples out there indeed.

So let me get this straight, its hated cause its "played out", too geometric and too many bad designers use it? Sorry but those are the lamest fucking excuses ever.
Some people need to loses their tight asses up and just relax.
AG is a great f-ing typeface and I could give two shits what other people think. Call me ignorant all you want but it seems more ignorant to despise something for no real reason, especially something as meaningless as a typeface.

AG thin gets used on 90% of unicorn posters.
that is one very good reason to sideline it for a while.
I do still love the numerals.
