BonRickles - what do you think the strong points of a powerbook are?
Is the performance that much better/faster than a pc for graphic work? Or is it just a status symbol?
- quamb0
what is this baloney about macs as a status symbol?
its a compter. with os x. if you dig osx then thats that yeah?

(Feb 25 06, 17:37)I'd say it's more of a preference than actual reasoning.
You could potentially get a PC laptop using the AMD Dual Core processor, which has been rigorously tested and heavily favored.
The video card that comes with the MacBook Pro is decent, but also easily outperformed by the choices avaialble for the PC laptops.
As for the monitor, well, I can't say for certain. I do know that the Apple Cinema Display's have been outperformed in terms of price and color accuracy by the the models from Dell.
I'd say the selling points are the OS and... beauty of the computer. I don't think I could honestly recommend price and performance as honest selling points.

i dont own a powerbook. i have an ibook for home and a g5 for the office. you really dont need a powerbook to get used to a mac. get whatever. if i considered owning a mac a status symbol, i would find the nearest shower rod..
if you are thinking a mac makes you more hip i recommend you do the same

how many games can you play on them?
- prophet0NE0
because stevie j says so...

I've never understood this attitude of people thinking that people just buy Macs as a status symbol... There lots more impotant reasons .. like the OS usability, consistently good interface design (cant believe the range of good to bad software design I encounter on my PC), good product design (attention to detail)... very integrated hardware/software support.. stuff like that.
"I'm ribit and I've owned like 10 Macs and several other things"
- mrdobolina0
you have to admit that there are people out there that do think the Mac is a status symbol. Same thing with iPods.
- prophet0NE0
i have a G4 and a Dell sitting side by side, kvm'd to one monitor and my apple keyboard and mouse and networked together. so, i'm both luke skywalker and darth vader at the same bloody time.
the point is they both do things better than the other, they both suck at some things. personally, i'm in osx 90% of the time.
but maybe you need to ask yourself, "am i more like lando calrissian?".
- pr6dotcom0
um, how about cuz they are puuurty :) i heart my 17"
- monNom0
because they're so nice to type special characteers on, and anytime something goes wrong, just throw away preferences!
- prophet0NE0
because windoze is like a honda, it's ok, gets to from a to b but it feels cheap and gets broken into often.
and osx is like a lexus, does most of the same sh*t as a honda, but looks better, more expensive, and chicks dig it. nerdy chicks.

Buy a powerbook, but make sure that on your way home you purchase one of them big old bag of ice cubes for about 6.99USD.
To keep that baby nice and cool.

c'mon man, do some research. seriously. if you are asking that as your main and deciding question you will get nowhere. but to answer your question is simply no, and yes to some.
i work on both and like them both...and hate them both. i do most of my freelance work on my toshiba laptop and most of my dayjob work on a dual g5. i personally can't justify or afford to spend $3k on a powerbook so i went for a toshiba for less than half $1299...and it is definately not slower.blah blah, enough said i guess
