has anyone ever seen any product from lulu.com? I wonder what the quality is like, sounds a pretty good way of getting a book made up cheap though, I mean, just say if you want one or two for yourself.. could make some wierd comic or who knows what

the first harry potter book was passed by many publishers until some admin told her boss that the book had potential. How many are kicking themselves now?

i had a friend who used lulu for his design book and he said it came out really good as far as quality goes. his book that he did at lulu can be seen here:

i should clarify i didn't write a novel, my book was more social commentary and design oriented. but the link to it is here:

so yeah, i mean, with lulu you don't make a ton of money but you can still get it out there free of charge. self publishing you'll probably lose money, but either way, it's great just to have something you do in your hands.

keep at it man. harry potter got passed by all the big hoses and many smaller ones. find an independant agent that can shop around a few of the niche publishers. just cause a few people don't get it doesn't mean it aint great.
The Confederacy of Dunces got passed so often the authour killed himeself. his mother kapt pushing it and it's considered a modern classic now.

Great advice scarabin.
Can't deny the truth.

Thanks for the opinions NTers.
You guys rock.

what kind of genre was that?
- tconn0
Male literary fiction. A genre that doesn't sell. It's a common belief in New York that women buy literary fiction. Men buy thrillers, historical fiction and crime novels. If you write a novel that gets to heart of what it means to be a living, breathing, suffering, fucking, agonizing, cheating, drinking, pot smoking, angsting, fathering, ultimatley failing male, then New York editors (mostly women) simply do not give a fuck. That's the reality.

actually if authors wanted to reach more people they would switch to a screenplay format. an organization based on this that helps authors protect their works and anually funds the creation of some of the flicks. basically an independent studio that revolves around reader input (through web votes), making this stuff available on the web would be tough because when hollywood studios poach the ideas, suing them would be a bitch. but either way hollywood tripe is changing and this will revive it to the great artform that wop directors rasied it to in the 70s.
this indepentdent film authoring program would be most badass if it employed excellent known directors.

Hmm... I think the valour of a story (isn't it all writing is all about? making a very good one?) should be independant from all that sex thing?
I'm in Europe, so I don't really know how it works out there in the US market, but a damn fine story always sells here in spite of the same predictable sex considerations, and in spite of what people usually say.
Maybe you're thinking too much about publishing and not about the plot ;)

I mean, not minding the public so much but the work itself. That's where the "hooks" are i reckon.

write a new one with a better hook

I agree and disagree with you at the same time. Yeah, those publishers might be right, but at the same time, they might be wrong. I mean, look at what Dave Chappelle was talking about the other night on Inside The Actors Studio. How these studios wanted him to provide a more "universal appeal"... He told them basically to fuck off and continued to do it his way, and now look at him. From stand up comic, to sidekick actor, to the motherfuckin man.
Not saying your the next Chappelle, tconn, but it's possible. Also, you might need a better hook. :)

no, hollywood movies suck because they titrate the fucking scripts down to warmed over shit. same way that iterative design kills the art involved.
hollywood has soaked through and polluted europe- not that you asswipes don't deserve some backwash. makes me wish I could understand bollywood movies.

that's a dead end subject in my book.
WE KNOW that working for the public (the crowd) is not the better work you can pull as when you work for yourselves or your metier.
maybe writers and artists should quit making work for publicity so that we could be as rare as gold.
If no one was willing to make a fast buck every of our literary or drawing professions would be much better off.
like, "excuse me, i don't sell myself".
* i wonder how many times this question has risen up...

every generation has its own greats, but the unknowns who inspired them are just as important. of course this has nothing to do with what you just typed, as I hate people from your part of the world. new motto for greenland - "We Welcome Nuclear War"

a general rule of thumb i have is that the best music comes from the folks that would write that same song whether they were paid for it or not.
i wonder if the same is true of all other fine arts.
