Is it possible for flash to play a timeline forward (normal), then back-track all the way back through the timeline in reverse, and repeat indefinitely?

i've done this before ... a long time ago
it was kind of wack the way i did it.
i set a var and checked it onEnterFrame .. if it was true..i would reverse by gotoAndPlay(prevFrame) or whatever ... then when you get to the beginning, unset the var and play
not that elegant but it works

write a function onEnterframe to gotoAndStop(your_mc._currentFram... - 1);

this tutorial plays the timeline forward, then backward

I've noticed reversing a video asset in Flash kills the processor. Anyone ever have this problem...then have a solution?

the obvious answer is all i have for you level2b...edit the video to play forward, then reverse...can't imagine you'd want to run rich media like that with (heavy) script pushing it in reverse. Sorry i dont' have a better answer?

so if i'm just trying to play a regular mc instead of a button, i take that kirupa script and use onEnterFrame instead of onRollOver?

Exactly.

Er yes and no.
onEnterFrame is definitely the event handler to use.
However you keep the same onEnterFrame script in the kirupa tutorial, but you need some indicator which changes the "rewind" statement (as shown by the onRollOver event handler in the kirupa tutorial), so that it's not always rewinding the movie.
