I know very little about PCs. How do I enable a PC to share files across a network (wireless, but I don't think that matters)? I used to have access to the old PC from my Mac but we have a new PC now.

On the PC, I tried sharing the folders I wanted as described on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows…but on the Mac, which is on the same network, I don't see anything when I click on network in a finder window.
Is there a system-wide setting on a PC that shuts off all sharing no matter how much Dean wants access to folders on that PC, even if that's his girlfriend's music?

you have create a LAN (local area network) first I guess.
What i just did here with the three pc's at home is create a LAN in my main desktop using win xp and the network setup wizard.
This simple process then created a few files that I copied into a floppy disk and installed those files in my laptop and my gf's laptop.
It was very simple really.
The Wireless connection has nothing to do with this. Our laptops run wirelessly and the desktop is of course is connected with cable all the time. We just run everything through a D-link router.

If you haven't figured this out yet -
Go to network connections in control panel on your PC. Click on your network connection and go to the 'support' tab. Write down your ip address.
On the mac, while finder is selected (click on the desktop..) at the top menu go to Go -> Connect to server.
Then enter smb://[your ip address]. It will ask you for a password, just hit enter, then you should see a list of shared folders that you enabled on your pc. Pick one, click ok and it will show up on your desktop. There are probably better ways but that should certainly work.

I don't see a Support Tab anywhere. Can you run down where to find that again? Sorry, Windows confused the shit out of me.

Well, I found it eventually, but the Mac doesn't think 10.0.1.2 exists. Macs and PCs should be able to connect to each other on a network. This is a shame.

they can...keep trying...
Is the PC at least able to connect to the Mac? (using 'Windows Sharing' on the Mac)
