Anyone else do comps for an agency, that won't let them display any of it in their portfolio, only to find your un-used comps show up in their future client projects?
Not too cool.

o yes
but since they bought the concept, cant really help it

well it explains why they don't let people display it as a portfolio piece.
a bit dodgy.

indeed
alot of people dont show their entire work.
it is dodgy but it is cost effective for them.
just like how the new VW slongan is not done by C+P but its actually a BBDO slogan that was made 4 years ago

on a similar note...
a company that sends me a lot of work emailed last friday afternoon about a tight deadline site mock-up..."if you have a past layout you think you can use that would be great. I am sure you have done a lot of sites that would work just fine."
i was a bit pissed. that not only shorts me as a designer, but the "soon-to-be" client, and any past client that paid for the dev. of that re-used "template".
when creating any layout, i try to keep the company's industry philosophy, style, etc in mind and do as much research as time allows to that the design makes sense and flows well.
i need to explain that more thoroughly i guess

We're living in a pre-processed, no-service, cookie-cutter society.
When was the last time the average person could afford a house that wasn't a template?
Or the last time you could customize something that wasn't a sneaker or a new car?

all that feeling the philosophy i don't buy... i smell bullshit... surely if you have put time into a relevant naigational device / layout... then use it

that sucks, in8.
i have been asked to do it before, and never have. but, i also have not ever seen my work used on one of the agencies i work fors' portfolio either. that is lame.

I'd say always burn a disc of the comps you like, and while it might not be too smart to put it on your site, you should def. put it in your printed book, or CD-rom thingy, or whatever. If people asky why they've seen it before, just tell them you worked on it, which is true. They prolly won't call up the old agency and ask questions.
I've done work that never got presented to the powers that be for bullshit political reasons, & I'll be danged if they aren't on my website for all to see. So while they might technically own the work, they can't rip me off in the future. Serves 'em right...
Anyways, good luck with that mang...
