did you all go for/get financial aid, or did you pay out of pocket?
is it safe to assume tuition is similar to undergrad tuition at any given school?
wow – I didn't realize I was this interested in an MFA!

grad credits are much more expensive

Grad school is very expensive. Luckily most schools give tution waivers, teaching assistantships, research assitantships, and other things to help grads pay for school.
i've worked part time and taught inorder to earn $ to pay for school.
also depends on the school i would think. and how long you are going to be there. my mfa required an ma first, so it's taken longer.

MFA vs. porfolio school vs. MBA?
MFA in design only seems like you woul do that to teach. Yes, it would give you more time to explore and develop, but I think you could do the same thing on the job. The onlly benefit I see to a non-professor is if you went to a school with a totally different school of thought than your previous training.
What do you think about going from a BFA in design to a portfolio school for art direction?
What about doing an MBA in marketing to accent either deisgn or art direction? worth it? not?

an MBA would be a great compliment to the BFA designer who's looking to run an agency in the future

If you want to teach design, most schools require an MFA... mine included.
For me it was very worth it, but I wanted to teach. For someone with no aspirations to teach, skip it... work at a good firm instead.

Dear 53feet
I graduated from Iowa in December of 04 in english. How is their program? The library seems pretty decent, would you agree?
I love IC and graphic design. I am thinking of applying for an MFA at Minnesota in Duluth. I really miss IC and would love to teach there. Any comments welcome!

- cram0
hey wetter... well ts retired you know... or maybe you didn't. so we are filling his spot with a new designer. (hopefully, this isn't all the way through yet)
how's the new job?

I got my mfa, one because it was free. i got a grad fellowship that paid for my entire school as well as 1200 a month to live on. i did all this because i was fresh out of college, i had just gotten my degree in commercial photography and advertising and i wanted to expand my skills in the design realm. everyday i'm learning how to bridge all that knowledge and to forget all the useless stuff. today's another day.

Hey Jay,
IC is great, and UI is a fantastic school. The design program is small, but the entire soa is pretty cool. It has pluses and minuses like all school.
do it, get the MFA. I've loved the opportunties i've had to explore and study design, as opposed to getting a project and doing it.

i've wanted to get my MFA for a few years now, was looking at yale, few places in NY and out west. pretty big places, but i figured why the hell not.
i have a decent job now, not design related, and would hate to give it up.....so conflicting.
would love to teach but at the same time i could go pretty far with my current job so it's like standing in the middle of a teeter tot.
