What do you think is an average price to charge for web design comps? Do you generally create comps for the home page and content pages? Also, how many versions and revisions do you normally do?
BTW, I know how to calculate personal rates but I am curious of the average cost as I have seen prices mentioned vary greatly.

depends on the complexity of the site really and the different type of pages needed.
Normally I'll do a homepage to get basic things sussed like colour scheme, logo/nav positioning roughly agreed and then content pages if needed after that.
I don't know what I'd charge just for comps as I normally just do them after I've agreed a fee for a project so they're kind of chucked in.

i normally include the comp price into the cost of the site.
3 home page comps. when they choose one i'll then to an inside page comp matching the home page they chose.
i used to do 3 home pages and 3 inside pages but i got to spending way too much time on them and the clients were basically being overwhelmed with options and things to choose from. it got to the point were i was spending weeks developing concepts.

A little sales trick that seems to work for me is making the home page design/build the largest cost within your breakdown or rate card. Leaving additional pages at half the cost of home, or lower, muscles them into paying for a full site.

Thanks, do any of you do comps and then code just the Home and a content page as the final deliverable along with the PSD file?
I know what I would need to charge but I am also curious about the average cost for something like that.

I've never really just done the comps for a project, but I've had people do them for me and have been charged anywhere from a few hundred for just a home page layout to up to 3 or 4 k for a hom page, secondary page, PSD, and the coding of the two pages. With ranges all in between.
I offer a client 2 original comps and when they pick the one they like, I quote on X amount of revisions. With the first round of deliverable revisions I give them a secondary page.
Hope that's at all helpful.

I make sure I show the client a really complex and colorful site. When they are looking at it, distracted, I steal thier wallet and run like hell.

It depends on the project and the size of the site.
If I have personal interest in the site I generally charge less.
I used to create 3 but now I like to limit it to 1 or 2 as I found clients will want to mix and match comps.
Seems best to include it in the overall charge and about 8-10 hours each.

i have to agree with sherman. i usually do 2 comps and will charge anywhere from $500 to $1500 for the design. it really depends how complex the site is. a lot more thought will go into redesigning amazin.com's index say than a 4 page site for joe x's pizza.
