Many galleries to check out in D.F. ...enjoy those.
There is this double decker bus that will does loops around the city. You can pay once and hop on-n-off all day. Very touristy, but worth it if you're looking to check out a lot of the more well known locations.
If you know ppl down there, take a boat ride in Xochimilco. Take booze on the boat.
Careful travelling. I know ppl who have been kidnapped by taxi drivers. Other than that, you'll feel safe in the major parts of the city.

keep in mind, any food washed with water and not cooked(IE. lettuce, fruit, etc) could still have water on it. And forget mixed drinks with ice.
I even ordered a beer and the waiter brought it out with a glass of ice and poured the beer into the glass. I was thinking wtf but didn't say anything? Turned out ok though.

Pan, do yourself a favor, what saved my ass over there was i carried two large water bottles with me in my bag because sometimes it was tough to find bottled water there... also, depending on where you go, you will find a number of people begging, and i always carred around a bag of bread/candy so, while i didn't give them money so much, at least i could give them a bite to eat. another good ideas is to bring pens with you to give them out to the chilren, they like that as well... and the taxi rides are hella fun!
just a thought... you'll have a blast there!

Don't smoke a joint on the beach 2 hours before your plane leaves and get arrested. It's not a good experience.

when stoped by the cops simply offer to buy them a bottle of their favorite whiskey...they will catch the drift...then simply pay your way out of trouble...id say 50 dollars will get you out of anything..I've gotten away with a 12 dollar bribe before...no joke.

The last time I went to Mexico it went something like this.
I step out of my hotel.
Little boy in stiff accent: Hello sir, would you like to buy my mother for $10? She is a virgin.
Me: ?!?

The water situation is not as bad as people say. But anyway don't drink water tap water just to be safe. Chicken is 110% perfect.
As to carrying a bottle with you all day because there's nowhere to get bottled water, you don't have to. There's tons of stores and places where you can get bottled water. it has never been a problem for us to buy water, snacks, soda or anything coz there's stores everywhere. We are a normal country with convenience stores and 7-eleven's everywhere.
if you eat in small restaurants and want bottled water, make sure they bring you the bottled unopened. Some cheap-ass restaurants could bring opened bottles and you can't know if they poured tap water in it. Very unlikely they'd do that, but just be safe.
DF and Mexico City are the cities with insecurity issues. The rest of mexico is safe with average problems. I feel equally safe when I walk downtown Vancouver and when I walk in Monterrey or my hometown.
In Mexico city you might wanna try to carry little cash, avoid wearing expensive clothing or accesories if you know you are going to a poor area or a Compton-like place (Cali) If you ride taxis, don't be a dumbass and get on one that has no licence plates or that had dark tinted windows.Mexico City used to be safe. It was a great city. In the 90's it turned into an insecure city but it has changed positevely in recent years. Crime and theft is not as common as it was in the early 90's or as people tend to imagine.
If you do decide to give something to panhandlers or people on the streets give them a few coins. Don't give them other stuff. If you have seen the movie "scary movie" you'd remember that scene in the beginning when a poor guy asked the three girls for money and the main character gave him a sandwitch and he threw it back at her and said "I said a dollar, bitch!"
That's pretty much it. Mexico is a goo dplace to visit and for sure you'll many intersting places and things to do.

Off to Monterrey next month -- any tips or advice on what and what not to do? May have a week spare as well, could head elsewhere.
