Unless an agreement is reached, it seems like a strike is definite come midnight tonight. If you can, you should show your support at the rally today in front of the Governor's Office (39th and 3rd ave) at 4:00 pm.
Why at 4:00pm is beyond me as a later one would probably attract more people who have work. Hopefully it will still be going on when I get off work at 6:00pm.

the strike already started this morning.

I realize as much. I was referring to the strike that effects the public bus and train lines and not just the few private lines in Queens.

Enter response:
why don't they give them the $0.24 and shut up already... they're not asking for much -- it's obvious how important their work is to the city.
sheesh

mta offered a 9% raise over 3 years. for someone in the service industry that is not that terrible.
- adamfinger0
Yeah, and a list of givebacks. Not a good deal.
- vwsung18t0
i'm gonna go support for the mta.
- adamfinger0
Why the fuck would you support the MTA?!?!
- ldww0
why not
- Ronal0
I just wanna get to work ...
- adamfinger0
How about the fact that they offering a pitifully low wage increase WITH givebacks, broadbanding (one person doing multiple jobs), increased healthcare costs, newer workers would start out earning less and retire at a later age and a slew of other shitty deals for the transit workers.
The MTA has had a surplus of a billion dollars and should give it to those that do the actual work.
- vwsung18t0
i'm just following a path less traveled.
- adamfinger0
We all want to get to work. I live in the Bronx and the MTA's contingency plan doesn't provide me with any means of getting to work, but I'll find a way.
- ldww0
i do not know alot about this, so i can not arguee all ppints. but when they have a "surplus" of one million that does not include the billions they owe.
whts the big deal with having people do more then one job. if the secretary is out and i have to go make a photo copy, should i get paid more dring that one day?
i just think that unions are a way to bully your employeer into paying you more and giving you more then you deserve.
i mean they are subway and bus drivers, token booth clerks, and janitors -- its not rocket science.
- adamfinger0
Siding with MTA is less traveled so therefore you will go that route? That's perhaps one of the most asinine rationales I have ever heard. Anyone who plays devils advocate simply to appear provocative shouldn't be taken seriously.
But, in regards to your nonsensical stance, the MTA already wields entirely too much power. That, coupled with the draconian Taylor Laws, strips the union of nearly all their leverage so in reality, you siding with MTA really isn't the path less traveled. It's the mainstream point of view, one promoted by big-business, free-trade rhetoric, governments, the media, etc.

luckly the new media dept has an "just work from home, but do not tell everyone" policy. cause corporate told us that they would not allow telecommuting if the stike happened.
its stupid to think that people who program or something can not work from home.
no fucking way i am walking or taking a taxi from brooklyn everyday.

Who determines what someone deserves? Do they not serve a necessary function? Do they not "move NYC," so to say? Does it really matter if they aren't undertaking rocket science?
In a region with astronomical costs of living, it would make sense that everyone, regardless of how valuable YOU deem them, should be compensated with a livelihood that affords them housing, retirement, the ability to put their children through college, etc.
And when there are more than enough resources, people shouldn't be forced to do multiple jobs. Designers don't share that sentiment because we think working 24/7 and no job stability should be the norm.
