About a month ago, my girlfriend's 12" powerbook did this. It was acting ultra slow and then would not reboot. I was, luckily able to retrieve some data off of it (under target disk mode). Ran FSCK to infinity (under single user mode), kept giving I/O Errors. Turns out the hard drive was failing S.M.A.R.T. Had to replace the drive (this is just over the one year apple warranty, so of course apple wanted to charge 3X what other repair shops charged.
Then, about a week ago, the same thing happened to my brother's 12" powerbook (purchased around the same time, also out of warranty).
I also had a 300GB Lacie D2 that cacked recently too. Thus, I have ZERO faith in harddrives now, and have been backing shit up to dvd's religiously.
Bottom line: Get applecare if you still can or your completely fukt.

apple tries to suck the most money out of you from their ipods to their powerbooks. what's the average life span of a powerbook? I had mine for 8 months now.

"can i get apple care after year and half ?
MrDinky"i wish! 1 year is the maximum timespan that apple will allow you to purchase applecare.

i've had my titanium g4 book since the first was released. works fine and runs great, even being a slower machine. i constantly back my drives up. fonts, programs, data the whole 9. i recently went through a battle with a lacie drive as well... i bought two 500gig drives and they both ended up fucking up and losing info. don't buy lacie products. they are not dependable. backing up to dvd is worth the extra effort.

I dont think DVD is the answer...too much work.
Just start by assuming that any given drive will die today, or within the next 2 years.. But if you use 1 drive (preferably 2, if you want dual backup of your incremental backup history) to backup theres little chance of all your drives dieing on one day...so you are fine.

just DONT keep stuff ONLY on an external drive. That IS NOT a 'BACKUP'.
clear? :)

I work at a computer repair shop, see hard drives die all the time--It's not a Mac problem persay, just depends on the hard drive manufacturer. Laptop HDs usually have a 2-3 yr lifespan, but this can be a lot less if you move the comp around a lot. Either way, replacing the HD is a pretty simple/relatively cheap thing to do, it's getting back you data that you'll have to worry about...

(Oct 24 05, 10:35)actually im pretty sure you can. just the way it works is it it will be 3 years since when you purchased it. so if you had it for 2 years already, you only get 1 year left. so you end up paying so much for a little time.

Mine is plagued with problems! It overheats and freezes! It doesn't allow me to run Studio MX. The people @ Apple Support haven't been able to assist, they've told me to put it in for repair!! Apparently Apple take forever to repair/service things! Must be all the iPods being sent back!

i love my powerbook but apple sucks.
my friend worships apple even though she doesnt have money to buy anything.
apple is building up their followers/worshippers even thought their.
its all about the money now.
