About a month ago, my girlfriend's 12" powerbook did this. It was acting ultra slow and then would not reboot. I was, luckily able to retrieve some data off of it (under target disk mode). Ran FSCK to infinity (under single user mode), kept giving I/O Errors. Turns out the hard drive was failing S.M.A.R.T. Had to replace the drive (this is just over the one year apple warranty, so of course apple wanted to charge 3X what other repair shops charged.

Then, about a week ago, the same thing happened to my brother's 12" powerbook (purchased around the same time, also out of warranty).

I also had a 300GB Lacie D2 that cacked recently too. Thus, I have ZERO faith in harddrives now, and have been backing shit up to dvd's religiously.

Bottom line: Get applecare if you still can or your completely fukt.
