Hi all, I am in the process of researching a new computer for my freelance work. Here is what I know I will be doing with it, from that maybe a few recommendations on brands/size/speeds?
I will be mostyl using photoshop cs2 and dreamweaver. Although there will be times when I require 3dsMax and other graphics intensive apps. So a good graphics card is a must. Also I want a large flat panel monitor.
I can spend up to $2500 on this setup, not much I know, but it would be a improvement for sure!
Tnx NT!

Brands, schmands - You'll need a fast Hard disk (7,200 rpm +), as much [fast] memory as you can afford (1gb Min, 2gb pref), get a Dell widescreen LCD monitor and get a geeky friend to make up the rest - as long as it's got a ½-decent graphics card, processor and motherboard, you can't really go wrong...

Oh yeah, and get 2 hard disks - one for your OS and apps, the other for swapfiles and storage...

if you really want speed go for sata raid.. but don't forget a decent backup disc, as raid is a bit of a risk for data security

..and you'd (I'd) need a 3rd hard disk for separate storage anyway.
Actually, fuck all the above - get a mac - they're much better.
*drops thread, runs away.

lol, yeah i have had macs before and love them, but unfortunately some of the 3d work i do requires interaction with a few java programs that don't exist on mac.
I was thinking a BenQ monitor, anyone had good/bad luck with these? I think I can piece together a pretty slick computer myself for under $1k, leaving around $1500 for a monitor.
Thoughts?

Get a Dell thru the Small Business section and wait for the Buy One get one free 24" FP monitor upgrade when u purchase a system. The monitor itslef is awesome, two of them are even better. I see that deal at least once every two months. Most new vid cards will be able to support dual monts. Sign up for the email deals.

The 24" Dell fp is nice? Hmmm..... thats a good idea.... 48" of graphics love.... Thanks Davi-T!

see if Alienware has something you want. I've been itching to buy one.

that brings a tear to my eye davi-t.

I'd suggest: a medium fast Athlon X2 (like 3600/3800_
sata raid drives (2) if you can afford the 10,000 rpm Western digitals, go with those... they're spendy but speedy.
and a third high volume drive for storage. (doesn't need to be fast)
don't splurge on a graphics card. ~$250 will get you an excellent card. they're equivalent to the $1,500 cards from 6 months ago.
as much ram as your can afford. and don't dick around with LCD's, save you money and get a pair of high quality 21" CRT's

I agree with monNOM about the CPU and the monitors.
Also, stay away from Alienware, they'll rape you like a Mac.
And to add $250 will get you a good video card, it's a good thing that 3DSMax runs on just about anything.
