"leaving the world a little better than he found it" came from my friend's brother's funeral, for those who don't know.
may his legacy live on, i think it's a wonderful philosophy to live by.

i'd post skt's hobbit po-ta-to gif at you but a) it's getting old and b) i'm too lazy to find it.

and is it more apt to use terms such as "key demographics" and "target audience" when talking about design rather than "proles"? i know it's marketing wank, but you never design for the masses as such

that's the job of the civil engineers moth, not the artchitect. i think. stopping roofs falling.

It's my own job to stop the sky falling on my head so I'll leave this thread.

i think the graphic arts are more disposable than architecture. the guy at pentagram should understand that difference to begin with.

well no not the alt tag moth, but you were effectively saying that what you do doesn't matter compared to what an architect does. which is how a lot of designers feel, which is why said pentagram dude is saying the industry is in a state, lacking discipline and lacking self-belief.

art the old jam tart won't change the bread knife.

ah see kuz you are seeing design as being graphics only, the most visible and the most superficial side of design.
also: i design for the masses. telly innit.

i'm lucky if i can design myself some supper!

(Sep 27 05, 04:23)Well OK say it does. But then it's not the "key demographics" that need to more understanding of that than it is my Boss and Clients who rush shit through, not giving designers time to formulate an effective soloution...
Ah. Anyway I have to build a client extranet with para so I must leave now...

True vesp, I am talking only mainly of graphic design (but also web design etc.) but that’s cos I thought that’s what your question was – why the other design disciplines aren’t as high and mighty as architecture/product design etc. And even when designing for TV I think you have a target audience. The irreverent look of E4 compared to the solemnity of the History channel.
Or maybe branding people are evoking different emotions in different people so it’s always for the masses.
Probably halfway between the two.

Can I have the potato please?.
- paraselene0
yes, yes you may, chossy.
the words 'client extranet' have just reminded me what i'm doing sat in front of this big machine!

(Sep 27 05, 04:32)exactly. we need to believe in our own worth and educate each other and the client, in order to improve the end result for the audience. i'm not having a go at you moth, it's indicitive of the industry as a whole.
right gotta jet too, have to convince some producers who have never even used itunes as to the future of radio on the telly.

Radio on the telly?
What next? Radio with moving pictures?
- ribit0
what about books on the telly?.. people could ring in and ask them to turn the page.

ok, I've not had time to go through the thread but surely a designer who fails to communicate to their audience is a failed designer.
