damn I forgot the single most important weapon in any truly disciplined designers arsenal...

Comic Sans?

well you might as well quit your job then fate. That's as good as declaring design useless.

Bad soda.
We're not talking about Art.

haha moth. A lot of design IS useless, just a shinier something to attract your eye. Not all, just a lot.
Design is also called Commercial Art, a term that perfectly describes the duality of design.

But you know that, I'm just saying things for my own benefit really. I just enjoy the conversation.

(Sep 27 05, 03:41)i wouldn't say that objectivity makes design useless, but it's what separates it from art.
maybe y'all are clear on the distinction, but my personal definitions of the two change with the tides.
what is your working definition of design?
- paraselene0
haha. fate one step ahead of me...

Was the discussion only about design for media, or about design in general? As always I'm a bit confused what we are talking about here (i.e. how wide a definition of 'design'), coming from product design side, where I think (hope) theres more appreciation of design being more than just 'commercial art'...

Who knows ribit.
I'm a bit bored of it now and I'm gonna wait for vespa to come back with the tequila.

Will Design Ever Be Better Understood?

-------------so after all that the answer remains:
nuh.
;)

well at least the lack of understanding means we can all be evangelists for design... keeps us busy.
(is 'evangelists' politically correct?)
- paraselene0
bloody hell! and how will it if we have a go for fifteen minutes and then throw our hands up in the air and say 'we don't get it!'
right then, kids, pony up! define the bastard and we'll give it another go.
- ********0
No.
It's hopeless.
Vespa's ruined our careers.
Once we had the pleasure of leaving the world better than how we found it.
Now we're just doomed to self loathing.

it was design as a whole, ribit.
said pentagram partner originally comes from an architecture background (hence wishing design had the discipline of architecture), plus there was the director of the serpentine gallery and the head of major projects at the V&A, who comes from a background of making simulators for astronauts at NASA.
and perhaps we should know more than the "proles" but i don't think we necessarily do a lot of the time. an attitude of smugness is just another barrier between you and your audience.

design is:
unravelling the DNA of modern culture.
