Here's a bit of unconventional wisdom re: finding new good friends,
Last year I moved to england for a year MA and I knew no one.
It was nice to have creative friends of course, but there's a sense of imbalance because everyone is generally very similiar.
So on Sundays I went around and visited every church in the area, some a few times and got to know a lot of people in the process.
The benefits to this are massive. The people you meet generally share one quality, they genuinely care. My only criteria was to ultimately find a place with the most relaxed, loving, authentic vibe.
So suddenly I had friends who were really old, middle aged, everything. People who don't work in design. Factory workers, lawyers, retireees with amazing histories, some with war stories and immense knowledge of very interesting topics.
The range and diversity of people is quite wonderful. Eventually I found a church so viberant and wonderful it was very difficult to leave for my return to Canada.
You can find people there who are super trust worthy and often the Pastor will help you and talk/pray with you if you get really stressed, sad or freaked out about something.
The singing and messages really help keep focused on what's really important in the big picture.
Plus its a nice break to stop talking about typefaces, beer and movies with fellow creative types and get into the real world's of other people. It actually makes you a better creative.

caught this thread a little late, but it's quite interesting. i was planning on moving here back in april, but life happened and i also decided maybe the west coast would be a better world for me...
i was in ny last week working with homeless and some np orgs and i have to say, kstyles assessment of nyc is pretty accurate... it's amazing that in a city crammed so close together people can seem to live so far apart... so many faces passing through...
anyway, i still haven't decided where i'll be moving to - la or ny... maybe my job hunt will decide that for me.
- e-pill0
good luck mitsu!
