---that is not always true

(Sep 7 05, 11:26)it totally is though. If you can get more, then get it. If not getting it, you either don't know how to and have some things to learn, or youre just really truly bad. either way, there's something you can do to get paid what you're worth. If you go somewhere else and get shafted, then maybe you really are worth what you're getting paid.

yeah, I guess, but sometimes things are out of your control.
For example (and this is not the canse) Men make more than women.
So if your statement is true as though as it is. Women are worth less than men?
;)
What about people from outher countries like India who cant work legally in the USA. because they cant ask for more money than some one legally in the USA they are worth less?
because trully that is all they can get paid unelss they become american ctzs of course.

a lot of the women in my office make more than the men.
i find that statement untrue. i think women devalue themselves in the workplace and therefore, get paid what they're worth. If they cant find it in themselves to be treated as an equal, they wont be.
The ladies i've seen who've stood up, got what they deserved x10.

so black people in the 1800s really were worth nothing, shellie?

you can be making shit in ohio but be making much more in l.a., but be stuck living in ohio, unable to afford the move
you would still be worth what you are in l.a., but it's out of your control.

ask for more money. Shy bairns get nae sweets.

there's people who feel sorry for their work situation... and there's people who do something about it.
so many people dont do anything about it, but they'll sit and complain.
I've had so many examples past and present that just go to show, if you use your brain, you can get just about anything you want within reason.
i dont think bringing slavery into this conversation is a fair or relevant topic to bring up to illustrate your point.

i think it is. women are still paid less than men in most cases, that's undeniable.
i think it's unfair to say they are therefore worth less.

some people are in positions where opportunity is scarce and they have to make do, no matter what they are worth.

There has to be something significant that your friend has that you don't and not just negotiating skills to be honest, you don't hire someone with the same skillset as an existing member of staff (who is happy with their wage) and give them double the salary for nothing.
Tough one, I don't think you really have a leg to stand on in terms of your friends salary but if you think you're worth a raise, it can't hurt to ask but I'd honestly leave your friend out of this one.
