gooze-
why do you see poor and rich as no dollars compared to millions of dollars??
thats not how it is man
the top 1% of the population control 99% of the money
according to your definition of rich i am poor
but i made a choice not to live in squallar or with out thinkgs i feel i deserve like clothes a car computer, etc. i earned it so it;s mine
i'm not poor nor am i rich but i plan to be and am working toward it.
what are your goals?
i don't care how rich people raise thier kids i could give a fuck less

not racist?
why do you keep bringing it up then, if you don't offer race as as tool or weapon, people can only treat you as human

"it is a choice for those of age to seek gainful employment"
well, yes, we are getting somewhere specific now.
but ideally this would be in an environment that offers the economical grounds for employment and where education is equally available and it's quality equally beneficial...
i could go on and on..
but it's bedtime now..

crouwel like i said in an earlier post:
i won't shut up just because i upset a few. The numbers behind migrant workiers coming in from mexico alone prove that there is work in america for those that want to do it. they wouldn't flood our borders and and work here if the jobs weren't available
being poor isn't not being rich
there are several layers in between
i honestly don't care about the racism you are trying to bring into this, because race isn't apart of the poor/rich diversity.
there are plenty of rich blacks and even more poor white
If you want reparations why don't you go back to africa and collect from the tribesman who sold thier people?
that shit isn't my fault.
and this is what i'm talking about. Bitching instead of acting, so many people wanting so few doing anything about it
i think the african american race has more than to itself that it is possible to become educated and respected in this country
any inability to strive for what has done before them is choice

well i could be mistaken but i thought this thread was about poverty in general.
you seem to put it in the perspective of American history and racial tendencies..
hmm..

being poor is knowing you shouldn't buy that 24 oz beer because you have bills to pay, but you're still young, so you buy the beer.

'Knowing how' is the most valuable 'hand-out' anyone can receive. I think if America focuses on educating these people - alot of the poverty systems would be eliminated (of course you can't eliminate stupidity).
PonyBoy
(Sep 4 05, 13:23)exactly! I understand everything you're saying Ver3, but it doesn't add up. it's not that clear cut. offer me a choice of coke or pepsi and i'll choose what i want. offer me any two things and i'll choose what i want. if being poor or not poor was a choice and people chose to be poor, then they would be happy (having been given a choice and chosen).
so why are poor people unhappy?
it's more complicated than "being poor is a choice. and i think PonyBoy hit the nail on the head with education. upbringing is a large part of how people react to their situation in life. poverty tends to breed poverty.
- version30
its easier to be poor because it lacks effort and its hard to get up when you've been down so long
i never said it was or would be easy
but each of us have the option to make things better for ourselves
the difference is the ones that do compared to the ones that talk about it

my money was earned by me. i moved to an expensive city from a small town in the midwest. i cover the cost of my lifestyle with the efforts in my life.
don't talk about me like you know me. trust me, you don't know shit.
...says the affluent white kid in the big city.

i still say being poor is all about having a lack of choices, not a choice in itself.
- skelly0
I just think the statement "Being poor is a choice." doesn't add up.
Look around - clearly it's not that simple.
To say the only reason they don't "choose" not to be poor is because it isn't easy is to imply laziness. But that doesn't explain all the people working 70 hours a week who are still poor.
So they're making bad decisions? Seems pretty stupid to "choose" to work 70 hours a week for nothing.
So poor people are either lazy or stupid?
My point is if it's a choice, then why are so many people poor?
What IS the cause?
