I know a java developer getting £500 a week. Design doesn't come close.

Front end is more fun but backend earns more money.
You can do quite alot of backend with copy and paste but you cant do that with front end...

Is this a thread about what should be more expensive or about what is more expensive?
Really good work, whether it is innovative programmming or sweet design should earn more.
The answer all boils down to supply and demand.
Here in Italy we have a shed load of designers and not so many programmers, so guess where you earn more.
I would imagine that in India a really good designer will earn more than a programmer.

Not really, it depends on what type of strengths you have personally. I find the back end/programming stuff hard as hell, but lot's of friends of mine do that stuff on their ear yet can't make an attractive design no matter how hard they try.

web development back end is a whole different pay scale than C++ and others. billy G probably wouldn't touch it unless it involved porn

what is it you want? if money is your objective, you can do better in investment banking, $200-300k a year and then from on, the investment you make your own can go sky high with that capital.
as far as web industry goes, you probably top out around 150-200k if you are good. if you are wise about your money and how you invest it, then it's possible to drive a nice car and a beach house.
it's all about how you sell yourself. you think 80k is alot, then once you get to the point, 80k is nothing. you make 100k, 150k, and want more and more...human nature.

As far as I know at most companies a back end developer with the same amount of experience makes an average of 10K more than a designer.

Actually my friend from India told me that web designers make nothing in India. There are so many people in the tech industry that web design is over saturated. Even asp developers for instance dont make much more. He said to make money in IT there you have to have a more specialized skill that isn't oversaturated like SAP.

i know a lot who make around $100k or more in web industry.
in nyc, $100k isn't that much. i think crossing that 6 digit pay is the hardest.
