What is making more right now?
A Front End (graphics/ layout/ design)
or a
BackEnd (php/ asp.net / mysql/ access)
Developer?

Depends on how you pimp yourself!?
hahha ;)

I"d say frontend. You can always ship backend work out to India.
Of course, in porn I think you get more for backend work...

I like the top end meself.. oh you mean industry talk, industry talk......
- _salisae_0
a little bit of both and you're gold!

In my opinion, unless you are a kick-ass designer working for some major agency, there is MUCH more money in back-end, Java, C++ and dB programming. Anyone else that says differently is smokin' the ganjas.

_salisae_ with the nice shoes, has a point, the more versatile you are the better. I cannot remember how many times both potential employers and employers went for that line during an interview. Sell yourself like the whores you are. ;)

Backend work is harder to learn I believe.

Not really, it depends on what type of strengths you have personally. I find the back end/programming stuff hard as hell, but lot's of friends of mine do that stuff on their ear yet can't make an attractive design no matter how hard they try.

jox likes a bit of back end action

I think backend is easier to re-use things over and over. Get a string of projects going that are similar and you're set. cant get away with that as a designer.

it would be relative to how good you are at each field. just cause you are a designer or backend guy does not mean you will make what a good design or backend guy makes.

great responses guys, but how about in $$$ who do you thinink makes more?
I mean an OK graphic designer chargest 50bucks per hor and people are like WOOOO you gotta be good.
but if you do a php project you can charge 75-100 per hour and no one says anything.
Probably it is because more and more people think anyone can do "design" VS doing programming C++, Java, ASP, PHP is more difficult
Just thinking out loud... ;)

We prefer the backend of course.
QueerBitchesNetwork loves you.

same thing writers deal with. everyone thinks they can write, so tons of people devalue it. i couldn't even hold a candle to most copywriters.
as far as it being relevant though, i found i wasn't spectacular at either, but was decent enough at both to get by and do what needs to be done as a freelancer.

With backend if it works..it works and no one could know you suck at it. With design it's immediately obvious. I'd say backend is easier to get away with things being shitty but still making good $$$

In the design world... front end. If you want to make money as a developer work in fields other than web development. Now a senior software developer would make hands down more than a senior designer.

Exactly!!!
you make money to get by... but what if you want that 80G car or that house by the beach, who will be most likely to get the money to get it?....
- jpea0
well, if money is worth more than enjoying what you're doing for a career...
that being said, i make more as a jack of all trades freelancer than i ever did as only an in-house designer
- jpea0
oh, and it'll take a lot of work and a stroke of luck to make loads of cash in a service industry like programming or design.
go and invent something instead :)
- fusionpixel0
lol :)
yeah, im just trying to figure things out.
Dont get me wrong, i love what I do and Im a jack of all trades, working full time while doing freelance on the side. So in reality I dont mind doing a living out of either
