I'M from there (only in NYC for work for the summer).
May I suggest:
Ste-Elizabeth (off ste-catherine, between st-laurent and st-denis), the nicest terrasse in town.Santropol (st-urbain and duluth) great sandwiches, chill atmosphere
The Mile-End, the coolest area (not annoyingly hipsterized like the plateau). Go to Café Olympico on St-Viateur and have a bagel at the shop at the corner of Parc. Best in the world.
The tam-tams on Sunday, at the foot of the mountain on Parc ave. and Mont-Royal.
When going out, avoid Crescent. Too touristy, too anglo. The real thing would rather be on St-Denis, St-Laurent or Mont-Royal
Casa del Popolo (St-Laurent, south of St-Joseph) is a fun venue for shows. Try the Sala Rossa (across the street) for organic brunches on the week-end. Delicious and cheap.
Strip joints are famous, sure, but pretty much all sorts of sinful activities is well accepted. We are the Amsterdam of North America, after all. Buying pot, marrying a same-sex partner, easily accessible prostitution, that's all common in Mtl.
Advice: Play down your "americanity" a little. Girls, or guys, won't be impressed. You can still blend in, since Mtl has a big anglo community.

dont worry about speaking french.... almost all the downtown (and elsewhere) people speak french and english and many only english. In the downtown its english everywhere.
not funny for us but... we have to deal with it.
like _lp says, those streets are the streets to walk on. The Old Port can be fun too

radien and _lp have the right idea.
Personally, I frequent Resevoir, Bily Kun's, Biftek and Korova. But that's just cause I live in the area.

Maybe Bar St-Sulpice if you are with a group. It's on St-Denis south of Sherbrooke. Good terrace.

great architecture, galleries and museums, bars and restaurants, it's like the cultural mecca of Canada. A renaissance man such as yourself should have no problems getting laid, I mean having a good time...
- _lp0
And as justingodard always wants me to take im there, you could also try the 2 Pierrot, Old Port..
Be there, could be risky, 99% french party folks, as Quebecois as it could possibly be.
For the fireworks, there on Saturday & wednesday, around 21h or 22h. Ends jylu 30, hurry up.

i bet $50 that he wont get laid

lol, yes, SuperSexxe is the shizza.
But, if you're looking for some clothed fun then try this stuff:
~ The Canadian Center For Architecture
http://www.cca.qc.ca/~ Old Montreal is always nice
~ St. Laurent St. (Le Swimming, Tokyo, Biftek, Blue Dog, Cafeteria, etc.)
~ Cafe Creme on St. Catherine is a great place for coffee/tea
~ Up in Beau Bien there's a great bar called Chez Roger's (sp?) and there's also the best place for breakfast called El Coyote
~ On Sunday afternoons you'll want to hit the park with the massive drumming circle, the name escapes me right now but just as for the drumming park downtown and someone will know what you mean
~ Just hanging out on the steps of Place Des Artes is always interesting
~ As is the Contemporary Art Gallery
http://www.macm.org~ And during the summer you can't walk a block downtown wihtout running into some sort of festival so . . .
Some of this info may be old because I haven't lived there for a few years now but you'll have a kickass time no matter what. Great city.
Have fun.
