Anyone have any good advice on programs for sound desgin? Not neccessarily looking for thousands of knobs and effects. Just curious what you and you sound designer use.

soft samplers and synths:

http://www.waves.comI also use a bunch of other free vst's and apps from smaller companies.
you'll need a vst host/platform to run those. I use Cubase:

I will recommend to start with a good multi track editing software, a good microphone to record real sounds is also needed, sound design requires many time that you add and combine existing sounds that might be to hard to recreate from a vst instrument.
On another note, if instead what you want is compose electronic based music, then reaktor might be one of your friends :)

... and a good soundcard and midi controller.

I've been involved with it for a while. I do mostly audio restoration and conversion these days. More money, strictly placing ads for Churches. They gotz the $!
If you're looking to start go with a MIDI keyboard and some sound synthesis application, such as Propellerheads Reason, Ableton Live!, NI Reaktor, etc.
Sequencers are a bit different, you could start off with something like Acid Pro, which really does the job all the way up to Cubase, Pro Tools, Cakewalk, etc. Some soft synths have their own sequencer, I'd advise checking out Reason.
Just play around and you'll learn a ton. With 'Computer Produced Music', you pretty much can do anything today and it's the future of music.
Music is infinite.

(Jul 25 05, 17:11)no reason for Reason and Cubase, as stated Reason has it's own sequencer. If you are going to use an external sequencer, then go with Abelton Live!, it's by far on of the best sequencers out there giving you total control over your samples.

Cubase is far better sequencer than reason, I haven't tried the new version of reason though.
just to start, if you are doing sound design for video or animation, you can't see video on reason or in live.I do agree that ableton is a great music sequencer, but in my opinion logic is still the best one for studio.
but this is all a matter of taste really, everyone can rave about different applicaations, but you have to tried them first.
I do think that sound design and music composing are 2 different things.
my 2 cents.

Ableton live is awesome
ive just bought Logic pro 7, from a complete novice's point of view, Logic is very daunting at first but very cool
what do u mean by sound design tho ?
u want to create and or tweak recorded effects and sounds ?

The thought was simply to 'score' some animations and short films. I have some experience with an old PC tracking software MODPLUG. I was looking for some options that would be more flexible and work on my MAC.
Plus I just wanted to know what real industry heads use for this kind of work.
Thanks for the advice. I'll look into these.
Any other sound designers or composers have two cents...
I'll cash 'em.

wow
I used to work on mod plug as well, and before that, scream and impulse tracker.I remember those where only D.O.S. apps, and there was almost no GUI, it was all numbers, I can't even believe that I used that for writing music..
good times!

watch it with software stuff, as it can sound very software-ish.
no matter what software- try using your own samples and learn how to use your synths (not just patches).

Yeah, I'm really liking the idea of the mic, and even thinking about shooting just for ambient and environmental sounds (with the GL2 until I get a mic just for this purpose).

The absolute best audio arrangement program is Logic 7. They have tons of possibilities with the built in synths and effects. If your looking for more experimental or sci-fi type effects try Native Instruments Reaktor 5 or Absynth and finally one of the best softwares for processing and making sounds visually is Metasynth.
There are others that are amazing but they are more of a time investment. Metasynth is very intuitive especially for people who work visually because it allows you to paint sounds.
