I will recommend to start with a good multi track editing software, a good microphone to record real sounds is also needed, sound design requires many time that you add and combine existing sounds that might be to hard to recreate from a vst instrument.
On another note, if instead what you want is compose electronic based music, then reaktor might be one of your friends :)
