I'm amazed how astronauts have the guts to go into those machines knowing they are build with parts purchased from the lowest bidder.

(Jul 28 05, 05:26)Because seeing space is out of this world.
Sorry, but I wanted to start my day off with a bad joke.
Also, NASA stated that they won't be sending anymore shuttles into space until they can find a way to stop the foam from falling off.

it's never going to be perfect. not sure why all the negativity. don't be haters

exactly JazX, after all those crashes there's still plenty of people willing to fly.
Plus, in every movie astronauts at home drive the latest ZR-1 or one of the oldest vettes, so I guess they get paid quite well :)
- Jaline0
It's funny. You think they wouldn't pay astronauts that much. Not that they don't deserve it...just that most people would want to do the vigorous training just to get a chance to go into space, paid or not.

I hope space exploration will be back soon. Hopefully with new spacecrafts.
Is worth send seven people (each one of them had a "very expensive" training: engineering, astronomy etc etc) in orbit with an old spacecraft (i can imagine that organizing such event is very expensive, in terms of money, people, and structures)?
economically speaking, the benefits are worth of the risks?
(i don't know the answer)
or is just for pride?
- Jaline0
Not sure.
I know it costs tons of money if you want to go into space (ie. Lance Bass of N'SYNC). He didn't have enough to actually go into space.

reduce the defense budget and put more into the space program.
i just wish to be able to have my own moon landing (but with mars obviously) just like my dad did. where everybody is glued to the television watching one specific moment. everybody forgets the damn differences in the world. just watching together as man kind.
how often has that happened before in history. right now i can't think of one.

I just wish we could move beyond rocket boosters for getting everything up there - I mean, watching these things take off is simply awe-inspiring, but when you think about the pollution and waste required to get a relatively small load up there...
...when are they gonna start those space lift thingies?

hahaha Nairn

how about that private company space rocket race. why not contract them to build the "next space shuttle"
- Nairn0
haven't they already done that?

SPACE ELEVATOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
- Nairn0
Not so daft when you think of the cumulative time/energy/resource expenditure required for the next 500 years of space development...
..though, yes - a little daft.
Cool though!
- Nairn0
and not as daft as 'Project Orion', a concept from the 60s revolving around the timed release of small nuclear weapons to push a vehicle into space..

(spot the space geek :)

Personally, I've always liked the idea of a Space Tower /Railgun - create a fuck-off huge tower half way to space, attach a mag lev style railgun to the side of it and use it to shoot off heavy loads of material to whatever height orbit you want (though, obviously, not a very good means of getting people up there...)

Hmm.. 3 posts in a row.
Back away from the subject, Ewen - back away now.

Does this whole nasa space launch annoy anyone else?
> they are in a rush because... (answer above)
Even tho they are having all these probs they are still going to go ahead. First some window cover falls off, and then a fuel guage wasnt working and still isnt.
>>> the fuel guage isn't like the one in your car. the guage goes through miles and miles of wiring and electronics. it would be like having a 500gig hard drive and searching for the 1k problem file on it. it takes forever.
Im no rocket scientist but I would imagine that there are far more complicated things in the ship that they need, far more technologically advanced than a fuel guage, and when they can't get that working, thats messed.
>>> no you're not. neither am i but i have lit off a bottle rocket or two in my day.

heat tile debris = somebody's health care they;'re not getting.
useless and indicative of the entire United States Fog of Profound Stupidity
Do you get it yet?
