is that why no one minds when nike makes a running commercial a la chariots of firebrandelec

++++because nike's so huge - i think most of the world's corporations etc would be 'honored' that nike was inspired by their creation... like the folks who created the orig. chariots of fire scene.
but the skateboarding thing's a bit diff... alot of skaters are still young enough to care about 'the man' - and wouldn't be caught dead in a pair nikes.

whats did nike do to skateboarding?... aside from making otehr companies pay their riders more.
i think if you ask some pro's they have more cash in their pockets now than they did.
nike this, nike that... oh and what were you wearing back in the day before all the skate show companies existed... nike airs fool.

2Cents.... Nike is the proverbial 'man'...
they're a big corp - Micheal Moore even annoyed the shit out of them in his movie about down-sizing.
personally - i'm cool with nike... but they don't seem to fit the skateboarding persona so-to-speak. They're very much supportive of what was and now is 'mainstream', which yes - now includes nike.
just another good thing that's now commercialized and played out...
... in simpler words - it's now not as 'cool'. :)

do you have any idea some of the companies behind some of your "core" skate brands?
if you think they're all still independant companies think again.

lol @ my skatebrands (if that was for me)

What if it was one of their songs. What if they just had some studio musicians play a Minor Threat and used it in a commercial. This is no different.

Nike should do a "GOT CAUGHT" campaign instead. where the nikes are off in the car somewhere. JUST DO IT. n stuff.

2cents.. I think you're missing my point...
... yes - alot of these companies are supported by a bigger parent...
... what I'm talking about is the specific name 'nike' being put on skateboarding products.
It's a little different is Nike backs a company like Birdhouse (which needs no backing cuz Mr. Hawk has plenty on his own - but I'm sure he's got investors that took the reigns at the beginning and business managers to move it forward to where it is today)....
... but the simple 'name' makes all the diff. Nike has never been known for anything so independent as skateboarding. Yeah - runners run by themselves... blah blah blah... but running isn't 'hardcore' or 'extreme' and therefor doesn't carry the same image with it.
The Nike name doesn't really flow with the whole skateboard image... or the older perceived image of the 80 and 90's.

no shit, i think it's so funny that some 'creative professionals' couldn't care less about blatant plagiarism -- especially when the original copyright holder is vocal in their anger about it.
is it brand loyalty?

'Nike has never been known for anything so independent as skateboarding.'
I think the independence of skateboarding is an illusion (today).
'The Nike name doesn't really flow with the whole skateboard image... '
It will eventually.
I'd be interested to hear what the average teenaged skateboarder has to say about Nike. And I mean a large sample/cross-section.

elCajon: There's a difference between caring about blatant plagiarism vs. framing the event as a battle against 'The Man'.

good points Solid... notice I mentioned that skateboarding had a different personality about it back in the 80 and 90's (during it's rise in popularity... not the pool skating underground days of the 70's).

if you zoom in, you can see a skateboarder

and you're right, solid... eventually things become 'mainstream'.

I agree that at one time skateboarding was 'different' than it is now.
But I'm not convinced that EVERY skater - even in the good ol' days - held fast to the beliefs and lifestyles.
A lot of the arguments I'm hearing are romantic glorifications of a time/ideal that never truly existed.

damn, you guys are still talking about this shit?
