for my electrics, i've got a 2001 gibson les paul standard (gold top) and a 1973 fender telecaster deluxe (natural).
the cool thing about the tele is the dual humbuckers - i can get that tele "twang" outta the bridge pickup or the nice warm (more les paul-like) tone on the neck pickup (or nice mixture using both).

yeah, to learn you need a big chunk of wood to play. As you progress and mature, faster guitars become easier to play.
When I first started (too long ago) , i was playing a 1952 Les Paul original. The thing weighed a ton and was worth a fortune, but it wasnt mine. It was my lesbain Aunts ... And shee took it back. Dammit.!

U pretty much have to swap ou thte PUPs on Les Paus to get better tone. The factory ones are decent but experimentaing can get you such better results imho.

id stay away from epiphone. the strat packs or just regular strat will get you where you want to be. those epiphone packs they make with the sg totally suck ballz.
good luck!

what's an "electric acoustic"? is this just an unplugged-playable acoustic with electric pickups or is this some weird gay thing i don't want?

get the Fender, has a fuller sound.
the ovations are really thin and bright unless you get a higher end one, around 1-2 grand
