if you buy a used guitar, look straight down the neck and make sure it's straight. a bent truss rod will make all your chords sound wrong and your guitar impossible to tune properly.

how much are you willing to spend?

Scarabin - as long as you go with a name brand it should be cool - fender, ibanez, gibson, epiphone, etc.
After that it's just how it feels in your hand. If you're a newbie I know that's tough to tell...
Fenders play entirely differently than gibsons - they have different scale necks for one hting so the tension is very different.
Ibanez and others are kinda hybrids between the two.
Depends what kind of music you want to play as well...

i used to work for peavey....we were so burnt out on eddie and very glad when we parted ways with him. the man responsible for eddie's sound is an engineer named James Brown. he designed the 5150. he now works for kustom.

i don't really care if it's new or used, and i'm most interested in classic rock kind of a sound
60s-70s rock

I always liked eddies rhythm playing much better than his lead playing...

Classic rock sound - then get a cheap mexican or japanese made fender stra tor a lower end epiphone les paul or SG (which are made by gibson).
Think about the players you like and buy accordingly - Jimmy page, slash, Angus Young etc. - gibson/epiphone
Clapton, Beck, hendrix, blackmore - go with a fender..

look into fender jaguars
- scarabin0
cool, thanks!

jaguars are hot, but I don't think they're a good beginner guitar - they're way too tempermental and too limiting in the tonality spectrum...

yeah, i never owned one. but i used to own an epiphone. they're great if you replace the tuning pegs. otherwise you're tuning more than playing.
