Fuck it, bring it on. It's a smart move for apple to port out OS X to the intel platform. There should definitely be a version of OS X for the PC, giving people a choice between a (fairly) secure OS and the insecure bodge job that is Windows and there will at LAST be some competition in the home / business user OS market.
(sorry linux users, you're just not there yet as far as I'm concerned)Perhaps Microsoft will get off it's ass at that point and ultimately we'll benefit by the added competition.
Besides, I like putting together my own systems. I've built every computer that I own. If I could put OS X on my PC i'd do it in a second.

sorry but i really dont think mac OS could ever occupy anything but a very niche market

long long time ago, mr. gates said, it's linux or us. so osx heading down the *nix lane promises us good. and i bet that one day microsoft will go *nix as well.

People will install OSX or whatever it's gonna be called on PC's. They'll find a way. I've run OSX in Windows through PearPC, it can only get easier now.

shaft, how do you like pearpc does it run smoothly?
- shaft0
On an Athlon xp2400+ with 256MB ram assigned for PearPC it runs so slow that it's unusable for regular use. I only do browser testing on it. Even with quartz and other whistles off it can't even dream of running as fast as my mom's old PII 333MHz.
Also, there's no sound in PearPC.

ok, guess it's not for me then, thanks.

OSx wil stay on a Mac forever
designerror
(Jun 7 05, 00:23)that concept has been shattered by now.

Microsoft built its position on very loose attitude towards piracy. Windows wouldn't be where it is today if it hadn't been installed illegally on millions of computers through all those years. BTW, same goes to Flash.
I think that's why it will be very easy to install Leopard on a regular PC, even if Apple policy will not allow for that.
If you like the OS, you'll want to get legal and your next PC will be a Mac.

by officially not allowing to install Leopard on non-mac pc's they steer clear from responsibility for the OS crashing, lack of drivers, etc. on third party machines. What a smart move - it's not only not their problem, but it's also illegal!
Microsoft will soon have windows drivers for Apple hardware. So, if you buy a Dell, you can have windows and illegal, unstable, unsupported Leopard. By buying a Mac you get both. That's where a reason to buy a Mac still lies, aside from the design.
I guess there will be ways to share resources between systems (bookmarks, history, email archive, docs). I also expect there'll be preinstalled dual boot macs available somewhere.

it would be hard to dual boot because of HFS+
but if windows could understand it, then it would work out, escept that spotlight would freak out everytime you boot up, because it's index would not be correct...it happens now to people who use OS 9

Yes. If you read the excerpts from the keynote it is because of three things:
1. No 3.0Ghz G5 PowerMac like he promised.
2. No G5 Powerbooks
3. The Intel road map shows much faster growth than the IBM PowerPC series.IMHO: Who really cares if there is an Intel or IBM chip in there. With Apple, it is the whole package that you pay for.
The design of the hardware, the OS and their Apps.

all i want is a notebook that doesn't burn my weiner when it's on my lap.

"it would be hard to dual boot because of HFS+"
My PearPC mac has no problems navigating through windows catalogs so I don't think it'll be an issue. I even expect quick system switching features, sort of "hibernate this OS and restore the other one" at some point, or solutions to run both simultaneously.
