is maya the one?
im thinking about getting started with some 3d work. i got no experience at all (with 3d that is).

i always liked 3ds max better...i i think for a beginner the interface in maya is harder to comprehend without training.

All depends on what do you want to make using it. And how much you want to spend. Maya is good with animation to film, Max more like game developers tool. But nowadays both can do poth. then there is Lightwave which is rubbish. It's GUI is very stupid. Maybe it was because i have worked with 3d max and i just could get it.
But i guess you should ask this from 3d forum. I suggest
There are masses of 3d artists who can give you better advice.

so if i start using 3d max i get started in no time or?
is it hard to learn?

What clerk said. it's really easy for a beginner to understand max compared to other 2 main programs. But there are cheaper progs out there too - Cinema 4d for instance. i tried it but couldn't understand it also. plus it was really slow.
Max is good for a reason that it has tons of freeware scripts and large community to get help over the net. Tha would be my suggestion but think it through. Once you get one it's hard to jump ship. :)

There is no simple 3d :) like there is no art made easy. It takes time and bit of logic to understand how it works.

"so if i start using 3d max i get started in no time or?"

Hym, is softimage XSI running on mac?

(Jun 6 05, 12:57)nope and neither does 3ds.

too bad! seems like 3d guys is on pc's?

no XSI is only x86 linux or windows, but the app you want to learn depends on your intentions like mentioned before.
if you just want to learn 3d basics like modeling, texturing, rendering, animation etc. it would be stupid to invest right away in a package you might be only using for 5% the next few years
http://www.blender3d.com/
free and more than enough to keep a noob bussy for months and nothing you learn is wasted just like learning image manipulation in fireworks will make the switch to Photoshop relatively easy compared to starting from scratch.

you should've mentioned you were on mac :) but try cinema 4d if you don't need a more complex solution like maya, i hear it's really good.

Thanx hym, I will try blender.

rustboy.com read about brian
he uses software thats no longer in production low end 3d package look at what he is doing though....
anyway if its long term investment and your serious about it XSI is awsome i recommand it.

"too bad! seems like 3d guys is on pc's?"
for rendering i don't see much issues with ussing macs running renderman or mental ray but really heavy 3d modelling and animation you will be stuck to a pc workstation
the quadro video card i have here doesn't even have drivers for OS X

Hym, it's nice to see another XSI user on NT. We are somewhat few and far between (although in NYC those numbers are getting up there as a lot of the top commercial studios are using it).

xsi foundation is the best bang for your buck but no mac port
