All depends on what do you want to make using it. And how much you want to spend. Maya is good with animation to film, Max more like game developers tool. But nowadays both can do poth. then there is Lightwave which is rubbish. It's GUI is very stupid. Maybe it was because i have worked with 3d max and i just could get it.
But i guess you should ask this from 3d forum. I suggest
There are masses of 3d artists who can give you better advice.
