no XSI is only x86 linux or windows, but the app you want to learn depends on your intentions like mentioned before.
if you just want to learn 3d basics like modeling, texturing, rendering, animation etc. it would be stupid to invest right away in a package you might be only using for 5% the next few years

free and more than enough to keep a noob bussy for months and nothing you learn is wasted just like learning image manipulation in fireworks will make the switch to Photoshop relatively easy compared to starting from scratch.
