There are model countries that have done the right things throughout the years. Take Botswana for one. Land locked and still not in debt and have great standard of living and honest government.

(Jun 6 05, 07:32)and it'll be even better once they've finally obliterated those pesky bushmen!

I wouldn't blame Bob Geldhof and those types. They try, problem is that there are too many middlemen involved and the money doesn't always go to the right places. Typical with non-profits and NGOs in those parts.

tee hee paraselene, you know WAY too much girl. small minority there though. ;)

(Jun 6 05, 07:34)Yeah, point taken JazX - I guess I'm asking a bit much of our 'celebs'
- JazX0
who the f*ck knows, you know?

jaz - NGO's run into the same trouble everywhere. the same way that not all of the relief aid has reached the right areas after that tsunami because of inter/regional politics. Don't be so hard on Arica all the time. :)
- kelpie0
isn't the whole point to try to address the black hole our aids been going into to service these guys wallets rather then thier countries debt?
Please (seriously) correct me if I'm wrong but I've been thinking that was the one difference to this years plans, it's not just chucking money at dictatorial regimes and hoping they have a wave of conscience this time?I should point out I am disgustingly ignorant on this front. Please enlighten me, pan-african experts of NT :)
- JazX0
yup, sad eh? not to mention the 90% admin deal. I'm not being hard on Africa. the leaders are the sh*theads, not the people

Jaz part of the debt relief being proposed by the British is intended to have stipulations of good governance in exchance for aid. Not simply throwing money at leaders to distribute at their behest.
- kelpie0
and is Bob not all about political pressure this year rather than fund raising?
(including swearing in our parliament. Shocking Irish monkey ;)

Anyway, I don't think anyone can legitimately say what's what. Ok, yes they have busted countless leaders over the years with money they probably shouldn't have, etc. Swiss/offshore bank accounts, etc.
However, is there a mechanism in place that regulates what a leader or regime can take and not give back to the country itself, etc.?

(Jun 6 05, 07:47)well then I'm all for it. Aid comes in different packages too. How many volunteers go to places like this every year to assist in things other than dumping money into someone's hands. a lot

aside from the corrupt orchestartion of the global economy maintaining a status quo of poverty to benefit the rich most national aid programs benefit the donor countries more than the benefactor. e.g. the US manage to have 80 cents of every dollar of aid return to the country.
you have to spend money to make money.
to be honest the corruption of some recipient as a excuse of preventing development assistance is complete bollox at the end of the day - when seen in the context of the corruption of the global economy.
- Kes0
Jaz, rather than aid would you prefer the US abandoned the immense subsidies it gives to its farmers, maintaining one of the most inefficient workforce in the world, so it can live true to its principles of the free market that it forces upon African nations?
- JazX0
That depends, but you have a good point.

(Jun 6 05, 08:21)hahha, Geldof's wife was cheating on him with Michael Hutchens right? They said he died from that strange form of masturbation. o_O
