ok will try that, thanks so much mayo, you're so nice.

you can't do any soft returns (shift+return)?
in the print dialog box, make sure "all printer's marks" in clicked and then you should be fine.

thanks mayo, I'd rather use indesign than Quark. I used Quark before and found it very difficult.
I am having trouble with that page because the red paragraph is the same paragraph as the black text so I can't force the black text lower. I will play with it a bit.
thanks

I thought I did, how do I set the trim marks on InDesign?
- mayo0
On page 7 of the document, i'd like to see the red force justified copy to be cleaned up a bit. But over-all, i like the feel. Looks like you picked up InDesign rather well. :)

Just now opened it, babe. First thing that screamed out at me:
You really should show your trim AND crop marks. Please, please, please.
I'll keep looking.

thanks for the tips. I am using cmyk colors. I think I will include a hi res PDF and a low res one for placement proof and the indesign package files too. just to be safe.
thanks so much.
Here's an attachement of the layout let me know what you guys think?

just make sure the pantone colors you have chosen are reproduceable in 4 color process. There will be a four dot symbol in the guide. Also covert all pantone to cmyk before sending unless youre paying extra for spot colors.

ftp a zipped or stuffed folder containing a lo-res PDF proof, and the folder with your complete packaged InDesign files.
- Gorbie0
are you designing the catalogue 4 color process throughout?
if so... and maybe this is obvious but, make sure you're using the Process Guidebook, and not Solids.
or you will end up with very unexpected results.
- dippy0
Hmm... actually, maybe you should send the InD file as well, just in case. With the printer being so far away, who knows what they'll need.
- dippy0
If I were you, I'd send a PDF file (don't send the InDesign file unless you expect the printer to make pre-press changes for you). And print a hardcopy of the entire thing, since you said that your printer prints out the colors pretty accurately. Send the hardcopy along with the PDF file.

wow, thanks for the info. I don't know what I would have done without you guys. I owe you guys a pint of beer, a hit of E, and a big baggy of cocaine. Choose your poison!
I got my colors from a pantone book but the images I'm not sure. I'm using a 15 Powerbook, I've printed stuff that I designed on this and the colors seems pretty accurate.
If I send a pdf with my InDesign file. do you think they can follow that as a guide? I know I still have to see the proof. But at least they will be able to see how it's suppose to look.
- kld0
well no not really since screens and printers(laser or inkjet) will vary. If you have access to a CMYK color value guide or pantone process book(look for pantone colors that can be reproduced in CMYK), that may be helplful for solids but the photos might be harder to proof. I don't have a lot of experience with offshore printers but they should be able to give you a sense of what to expect, proofwise.
- dippy0
you cannot accurately check color, trapping, etc unless you have an actual physical proof in your hand. But if the printer is really good, and if your monitor is well calibrated, an online PDF proof should be a good indication of what you'll be getting. I've never had any real problems with color when dealing with PDF proofs.
- mayo0
no, you can't really check color from that unless it's something like a two color job and you have a 4 color photo in there.
with a pdf proof, make sure that copy and photos are in place and not chopped off or cropped incorrectly. Make sure copy didn't get scrunched somehow (it happens), make sure anything that crosses from one page to another lines up correctly. Make sure fonts are okay (soometimes, even if you send the fonts, some don't get linked and it just shows as garbage or a default). Make sure bleeds are bleeding.
- piperboytoy0
thanks Kid. PDF proof, will I be able to check color from that?
- piperboytoy0
I wish I can charge more, but i'm contract working at the place so I get a flat fee for the time I'm here. I'm hoping they will use me again when I'm done. then I can charge them more. As they get tones of government funding from all levels.
- kld0
They'll probably send a pdf proof so you can check positioning and text. You should contact them and ask what to expect.
- dippy0
Rush jobs also command a higher fee, so don't forget to charge them out the wazoo.
And ask for a Newstoday consultation fee. I'd say $500 is about enough to buy us drinks when you're done with this project.
